Ford eliminated its compact truck the Ranger from its lineup in the U.S. during 2011 saying it was because customers were no longer interested enough in buying small trucks.
Since that time, Toyota has enjoyed good sales with its smaller truck the Tacoma. General Motors enjoyed much success when it brought the Chevrolet Colorado back in 2015.
During the entire time Ford continued selling the Ranger in markets outside the U.S. Ford announced that a revised version of the pickup, the one being sold overseas, would return to the U.S. lineup of vehicles as the 2019 Ford Ranger. The 2019 version is larger than the old one, and has a few changes for the market, including the hood-line and grill.
For the market in the U.S. designers want the Ranger to have a “Ford Tough” look, said the EVP of Ford for Global Operations Joe Hinrichs. That is the kind of attitude that customers in the U.S. expect from a pickup he added. In addition, Ford wanted to have resemblance to its larger pickup the F-150.
The new Ford Ranger will have a 2.3-liter turbocharged, EcoBoost, four cylinder engine. This will provide power that is similar to rival trucks that have 6-cylinder engines but with a better fuel economy, says Ford.
In addition, the Ranger will have a 10-speed transmission, which is a feature to save fuel that Ford has added to many vehicles. In general, transmissions are more efficient with more gear ratios because that allows the engine to spend more operating time with its most efficient speed.
The FX4, a special option package, will provide tires for off-road, special shock absorbers, protective plates, and all terrain tires. It will have the Terrain Management System that is computerized that gives settings for different types of on- and off-road surfaces.
The new Ranger will have the same underlying engineering as the upcoming Bronco SUV that will be off road capable, which will be available starting in 2020.
Ford’s ability to have the truck’s engineering used for more than just the Ranger was a big factor in bring the vehicle back to the market in the U.S. Automakers rely on that type of thing of platform sharing as a way to maximize their profits, especially if a vehicle may or may not by itself sell in numbers large enough to make its investment worthwhile.
Both the Ranger and in 2020 the Bronco will each be built at the company’s Michigan Assembly Plant.
