What Does UK Hung Parliament Mean For Europe ETFs?

What Does UK Hung Parliament Mean For Europe ETFs?

The humiliating result has heaped pressure on May to resign, but she says she will stay and lead Britain during exit talks with the European Union.

The poll showed that Jeremy Corbyn, leader of the left-wing Labour party, would win 266 seats; the centrist Liberal Democrats would win 14; hard-right UKIP would win zero; the environmentalist Green Party would win one; and the Scottish National Party (SNP) would win 34.

Labour stunned even its own supporters by taking enough seats from the Conservatives to deny them a majority, in a performance widely seen as a moral victory for Corbyn despite the party's loss.

Niblett said: "Having made Brexit the rationale for the election, she nevertheless made no effort during the campaign to explain how she would manage the negotiation or what a successful deal would look like".

Referring to the "strong relationship" she had with the DUP, but giving little detail of how their arrangement might work, she said the government would "guide the country through the crucial Brexit talks" that begin in just 10 days' time. The DUP declined to comment.

With 649 of 650 seats declared, the Conservatives had won 318 seats.

Her failure to win an outright majority left her position as Conservative leader in question - raising the prospect of another election later in the year should her minority government fail.

No doubt, the result triggered the bout of political uncertainty in the U.K. Notably, formal Brexit talks are slated to start in about 10 days.

"People are crying out for help and he's been working on that, he hasn't really been working on Brexit", she said, while locals browsed bric-a-brac displayed on her daughter's stall.

Corbyn said May should "go. and make way for a government that is truly representative of all the people of this country".

The campaigners had had three scenarios in mind: The best-case scenario was forming a government, the second best was a hung parliament, and the worst case was the Conservatives on 380 seats, with Labour dropping to 190.

"We need to act fast and brutally now".

European Union leaders question how any British government could persuade voters to accept such an outcome and so would be wary of starting down the path of negotiating it for fear of ending up without a deal that both sides could ratify in 2019.

Labour gobbled up English and Welsh voters who seemingly wanted to punish Mrs May for calling a pointless snap election.

May's focal campaign message was her "strong and stable" leadership that would take Britain through divorce proceedings with Brussels.

"I think we're in a total mess", said postman Eric Peters, 58, dashing through the city of Wakefield.

"I assume that Britain, from what I heard from the prime minister today, wants to stick to its negotiating plan", Merkel told a news conference alongside President Nieto. That would also make it improbable that Britain could secure the rapid free trade agreement it wants with the European Union after it leaves.

She also promised to deliver the changes she set out after the two recent terrorist attacks in Manchester and London, giving police more powers and tackling radicalisation.

"The Conservatives have not yet broken the British system of democracy, but through their hubris and incompetence they have managed to make a mockery of it", it said in an editorial.
