US says Rodman did not help in NKorea release

"We want the world to know", The Warmbier Family said in a statement to the Associated Press.

"I'm really looking forward to spending time with the wonderful people of North Korea and of course, visiting with the Supreme Leader, Kim Jong Un", Rodman said in a statement on Potcoin's website.

The American college student who had been imprisoned in North Korea for more than a year has now been released, but his family revealed Tuesday that the 22-year-old has been in a coma for the past year.

"Our son is coming home", Fred Warmbier told The Post on Tuesday morning after Otto Warmbier was evacuated.

"We still have three Americans who are being held unjustly by North Korea".

When they spoke to CNN on May 3, they said they had not seen or heard from Otto since his supposed confession.

Warmbier's family was told that their son came down with a case of botulism soon after he was found guilty, and was subsequently given a sleeping pill.

Details of what Rodman plans to do there on his current visit remain elusive. Tillerson made no mention of Rodman's visit, and said the department would have no further comment on Warmbier and his condition, citing privacy concerns.

The State Department is continuing to discuss the situation of three other detained Americans with North Korea, Tillerson said.

Officials involved in securing Warmbier's release told The Post that it had nothing to do with Rodman's trip to Pyongyang, calling it a "bizarre coincidence" that might have been a deliberate ploy from North Korea to distract from Warmbier's condition. But State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert told reporters Rodman had nothing to do with Warmbier's release.

In March 2016, Warmbier was sentenced to a 15-year prison term with hard labor for stealing a political propaganda poster on January 2, 2016, during a tour of the country.

"Otto's detainment and sentence was unnecessary and appalling, and North Korea should be universally condemned for its abhorrent behavior", Senator Rob Portman, Republican of OH, said.

In announcing his arrest in 2016, North Korean state news media said that Mr. Warmbier had visited the country with the intention of "bringing down the foundation of its single-minded unity".

North Korea regularly accuses Washington and Seoul of sending spies to overthrow its government to enable the USA -backed South Korean government to take control of the Korean Peninsula.

"Otto has left North Korea".

Secretary of State Rex Tillerson says the State Department secured the 22-year-old's release at President Donald Trump's direction.

But on his final night in Pyongyang - New Year's Eve - Warmbier appears to have gone to a staff-only floor of his hotel and attempted to take down a large propaganda sign lauding the regime. "Fred, Cindy, and the Warmbier family have been remarkably strong throughout this ordeal".

A team was dispatched to Pyongyang and the sick University of Virginia student was handed over to USA officials. The magazine of the university's alumni association describes the Z Society as a "semi-secret ring society" founded in 1892 that conducts philanthropy, puts on honorary dinners and grants academic awards.

Warmbier was to have graduated last month had he not been detained. He said Warmbier's sentence was "unnecessary and appalling". On this trip, he has already been roundly criticized by some for visiting during a time of high tensions between the USA and North Korea over its weapons programs and recent missile launches. He had not been seen in public since his detention, and Swedish diplomats representing USA interests - the US has no diplomatic relations with North Korea - were denied access to Warmbier. In a separate appearance before the Senate Armed Services Committee, top US defense officials also warned about the growing threat posed by the regime. He was arrested for purposely placing a Bible in the restroom of a nightclub, which is a violation of North Korean law.
