US Attorney General To Testify Publicly At Senate Hearing

The entire Trump administration will come under examination as Sessions returns to the Senate for the first time since his confirmation hearing in February.

Sessions is prepared to make clear that there was no "third meeting" with Russian Ambassador Sergey Kislyak at the Mayflower Hotel, the source said, pushing back on reports that Sessions could have met with Kislyak at an April 2016 Trump campaign event they both attended at the hotel.

"President Trump knows that the country he has been elected to lead is threatened daily by terrorists who believe in a radical ideology, and that there are active plots to infiltrate the USA immigration system - just as occurred prior to 9/11", Sessions said in a statement yesterday.

He also urged Trump to produce any tapes of his conversations with Comey.

These are the most obvious questions - and frankly the reason Sessions finds himself in hot water.

In yet another damning moment from Comey's testimony, the former director said that the attorney general was silent when he "implored" him to prevent one-on-one conversations with the president, reporting that he told Sessions that such interactions were "inappropriate and should never happen". Trump has denied he tried to interfere with the probe.

As the head of the Justice Department, Sessions leads the agency that could be involved in fielding requests for tapes that Trump has suggested exist.

Spicer declined to say then that Sessions enjoyed Trump's confidence, though spokesman Sarah Huckabee Sanders said later in the week that the president had confidence "in all of his Cabinet". Did Sessions lie under oath?

In the private, classified meeting that followed, Comey reportedly told senators of yet another, undisclosed meeting between Sessions and Russian government officials - bringing the total known number of Sessions' covert contacts with the Russian government to three, so far. In a public rebuke of Sessions, Trump also called out the Department of Justice over its handling of his executive order blocking travelers from several predominantly Muslim nations from entering the United States.

"I urge that the Committee hold a hearing with the Attorney General in the open so that the American people can hear for themselves what he has to say with regard to connections to the Russians and the President's abuse of power", wrote Sen.

"There's no doubt that conversations that involve national security in a real sense are potentially protected by an executive privilege", Amann said.

Moreover, Democrats are also thought to be keen to press Sessions on his role in Comey's abrupt firing.

Pressure mounted at the start of the week following reports that Sessions offered his resignation to Trump because the President blamed Sessions for exacerbating his Russian Federation problems by recusing himself from the probe. The former director did not elaborate in public on the nature of the information.

During Comey's public testimony last week, the former FBI director said that he'd engineered the leak to the press of his own accounts of interactions with Trump in order to encourage the DOJ to appoint a special prosecutor to the Russian Federation investigation.

On Comey's accusations that Trump pressed him to drop the FBI investigation of Flynn, Bharara said "no one knows right now whether there is a provable case of obstruction" of justice.

This is where Sessions' recusal could really come under the microscope. Or does his appearance represent a White House-orchestrated counterattack following the damaging Comey testimony?

Will the Justice Department release Comey's memos?
