Trump Calls James Comey 'Very Cowardly'

"He's a leaker", Trump said during a White House news conference when asked about Comey's testimony.

After Trump again intimated last week that he could have recorded his controversial discussions with fired Federal Bureau of Investigation director James Comey, it remained unclear if that claim was true.

"I hardly know the man", Trump insisted during a news conference alongside Romanian President Klaus Iohannis in the White House Rose Garden.

US President Donald Trump had on Friday denied he tried to interfere with an FBI investigation, effectively accusing James Comey, the FBI's former director, of lying under oath to Congress.

"I'll tell you something about that maybe sometime in the very near future", Trump said.

"James Comey better hope that there are no "tapes" of our conversations before he starts leaking to the press!"

When pressed if he would be willing to testify under oath about his version of the events, Trump answered, "100 percent".

"I don't understand why the President just doesn't clear this matter up once and for all", said Republican senator Susan Collins, referring to the existence of any recordings.

A member of Trump's legal team, Jay Sekulow said "the president said he is going to address the issue of the tapes, whether the tapes exist or not, next week".

James Comey giving testimony. That confusing logic may have caught up with one of Trump's sons during an interview this week, and could have some serious blowback for the president.

While he spoke, many on Twitter expressed their incredulity over Trump's Comey claims.

Trump was out of line when he suggested Comey should back off Flynn; he appears to have little respect for the established norms of the presidency. That's what I have been focused on, but yesterday showed no collusion, no obstruction.

Under oath Thursday, Comey repeatedly called Trump a liar - Trump responded Friday by saying Comey was a liar.

Senator Collins, who is also a member of the Senate Intelligence Committee investigating Mr Trump's links to Russian Federation, described Mr Comey's testimony as "candid" and "thorough" and said she would support a subpoena if needed.

"Well, I didn't say that". The president also asserted that "some of the things" Comey told the Senate Intelligence Committee on Thursday "weren't true", but called on another reporter without elaborating.

The alleged conversation between Mr Comey and the President earlier this year, apparently backed up by the President's son, led Mr Comey to write a series of memos about their relationship and which were leaked to the press.
