Theresa May to face Conservative Party questioning over poll setback

Theresa May to face Conservative Party questioning over poll setback

Mr Green said talks with the DUP were "going well", adding: "At this very important time, we want to produce a substantial Queen's Speech".

The election result forced May to search for a deal with a small party of Northern Irish politicians, the Democratic Unionist Party (DUP), to prop up her government and vote through vital legislation.

Following the Conservatives failing to win a majority last week, the organisation is pushing for a "soft" Brexit to secure free trade and the rights of European Union citizens. A petition calling for the Prime Minister's ouster over her alliance with the DUP on had reached more than 700,000 signatures by Monday.

The Prime Minister apologised as she faced the backbench 1922 Committee for the first time since a disastrous General Election in which the Tories lost their House of Commons majority.

Davidson, who met May on Monday, wants "a shift in thinking" on Brexit with more emphasis on the economy and less on taking control of immigration, a source close to her told Reuters.

While Britons voted by 52 to 48 percent for Brexit in last year's referendum, Scots strongly backed staying in the bloc and Nicola Sturgeon, First Minister in Scotland's devolved assembly, said a so-called hard Brexit was "dead in the water". Sturgeon also said the election results "raises a very real question about whether this prime minister actually can put together a functioning government". The Conservatives are now trying to secure the support of Northern Ireland's 10 Democratic Unionist Party lawmakers to assure passage of May's program.

The Sinn Féin leader, who has confirmed his party's elected members will not take their seats in Parliament, called on both the outgoing and incoming Taisoeach to be prepared to act on their expressed concerns over the DUP's pivotal new role in Westminster.

The deal is also threatening to overshadow talks on Monday aimed at restoring local government in Northern Ireland after the power-sharing arrangement collapsed in January.

"I asked for a categoric assurance that if any deal or scoping deal was done with the DUP there would be absolutely no rescission of LGBTI rights in the rest of the United Kingdom, in Great Britain, and that we would use any influence that we had to advance LGBTI rights in Northern Ireland", Davidson told the BBC.

"We will use the position we find ourselves in to do as we promised".

But senior Conservatives acknowledged that the failure to secure an overall majority will mean the agenda set out in their manifesto would have to be "pruned back".

Boris Johnson, the pro-Brexit Foreign Secretary who is viewed as one of the most likely potential challengers, responded to speculation that he was plotting a leadership bid with a newspaper column calling on his colleagues to rally behind May.

Britain's descent into political crisis just days before the Brexit talks begin has sapped confidence amongst business leaders and infuriated bosses who were already grappling with the fallout from the vote to leave the EU.

As discussion continued, a leading business organization said the political uncertainty is leading to a "dramatic drop" in confidence.

The pound slid to its lowest level for almost two months after the vote, but the fall was much less severe than the one sparked by the Brexit vote in June 2016.

David Davis has signalled that discussions on the UK's exit from the European Union (EU) may not start on June 19 as anticipated.

"That reputation in 12 months has been destroyed, truly destroyed. That has really profound implications for multinational businesses that have made a long-term bet on London being the sensible place to base themselves".
