Suspected N.Korea drone photographed United States missile defense site

Pyongyang has test-fired several missiles this year, with the latest on Thursday when it launched several anti-ship cruise missiles from its southeastern coast - its 10th missile test of the year.

North Korea's state-run Korean Central TV Broadcasting Station aired two satellite images of the THAAD deployment site and the ballistic missile defense batteries in May.

The recent drone appears to be very similar in design to the one found in 2014, which used technology from the 1960s, and therefore may not be capable of transmitting the photos to North Korea remotely.

In the three earlier launches, North Korea tested different kinds of ballistic missiles, two medium-to-long range missiles as well as a short range Scud class weapon.

The South Korean military on Tuesday said a suspected North Korean drone took photographs of a U.S. missile defense shield before crashing on its way back to the community country.

North Korea boycotted the 1986 Asian Games and the 1988 Seoul Olympics, both held in Seoul, but it has since attended other major worldwide sports events held in the South. The drone is equipped with a Sony built-in camera and reportedly contained hundreds of pictures, including precisely ten photos of the Terminal High Altitude Area Defense system, also known as THAAD.

Moon on Monday stressed the importance of cooperation with Japan in efforts to denuclearise North Korea and Nikai agreed, the South's presidential office said, while Suga said the two confirmed the importance of putting pressure on North Korea.

In April, the U.S. sent its Carl Vinson aircraft carrier towards the Korean Peninsula, saying it was taking prudent measures against the North. Pyongyang has vowed to "react to any mode of war". South Korea's president, Moon Jae-in, has suggested that North Korea could be part of the candidacy for the sporting event.

In a statement marking the 17th anniversary of the June 15 Joint Declaration on North-South relations, the Committee for Peaceful Reunification of the country said while the DPRK wishes for peaceful reunification with South Korea, Seoul must abandon a confrontational policy with the North. China also says the system does nothing to deter North Korea.
