Surgeons Remove 30 Pounds of Man's Intestines After Being Constipated For Years

The man, who was reportedly constipated since birth, was operated at Tenth People's Hospital of Shanghai in China.

A Chinese man has undergone surgery in Shanghai to remove a section of his colon containing 13kg of impacted faeces, bringing to an end 22 years of pain caused by chronic constipation.

Zhou told doctors that he had suffered from constipation since he was born and took laxatives on a regular basis. The severe abdominal pain and colon problems were the result of a condition known as Hirschsprung's disease.

Numerous tests conducted showed that the man had months, even years of accumulated feces residing within a portion of his colon, which triggered the swelling.

His parents thought that his condition was a small ailment, so it remained untreated for years.

HD is more common among males than females and affects one in every 5,000 babies.

This causes blockages in the large intestine and requires surgery to remove the diseased part of the colon. Nerve cells were missing from his colon prevented his large intestine from contracting normally which did not allow the waste matter to push out.

Doctor Yin Lu and his team of experts at the 10th People's Hospital of Shanghai, in East China, met with the man and claimed they were stunned by the size of the man's abdomen, noting that "it looked like it could explode at any time".

Hirschsprung's disease is usually treated when those with the condition are infants, but in rare cases it can go undiscovered until adulthood.

Doctors diagnosed the man with congenital megacolon, which can lead to the bowels becoming paralyzed and cause fecal tumors.

They did not say why he chose to finally seek medical attention, but reports suggested it was because of intense discomfort.

Zhou was reported to be in stable condition, and is expected to recover fully.
