Sessions to testify before the Senate Intelligence Committee

Sessions had previously been scheduled to testify before the Senate and House Appropriations subcommittees Tuesday, but now that he's appearing before the Senate Intelligence Committee, Deputy Attorney General Rosenstein will testify before those panels instead.

The appearance before the Senate intelligence committee comes one week after former FBI Director Comey cryptically told lawmakers the bureau had expected Sessions to recuse himself weeks before he did from an investigation into contacts between Trump campaign associates and Russian Federation during the 2016 election.

As for the timing of Sessions' recusal, Comey said the FBI expected the attorney general to take himself out of the matters under investigation weeks before he actually did.

Sessions had been scheduled to testify Tuesday before a joint appropriations subcommittee of Congress, but on Saturday he sent letters to the committee chairmen saying that the intelligence committee would be a better forum to answer questions about Russian Federation.

Sessions on Saturday said he would appear before the intelligence committee, which has been doing its own investigation into Russian contacts with the Trump campaign.

In early March, The Washington Post reported that Sessions twice met with Russian Ambassador Sergey Kislyak during the campaign and did not disclose that to the Senate Judiciary Committee during his confirmation hearing in January.

Senators had been pushing for Sessions to appear publicly to answer questions about his contacts with Russian officials during the campaign. But, added Lankford "releasing his memos is not damaging to national security".

CNN later reported that congressional investigators have been probing whether Sessions had a possible third, undisclosed meeting with Kislyak. The Justice Department has denied that, saying Sessions stressed to Comey the need to be careful about following appropriate policies. So we were convinced - in fact, I think we'd already heard the career people were recommending that he recuse himself, that he was not going to be in contact with Russia-related matters much longer.

Two leading Senate Democrats, Dianne Feinstein of California and Patrick Leahy of Vermont, called on Sessions to appear - in public - before the Judiciary Committee, which has oversight responsibility for the Department of Justice.

Democratic Sen. Dianne Feinstein of California, a member of the Intelligence committee, sent a letter to Sen.

During almost three hours of testimony Thursday, Comey indicated to members of the Senate Intelligence Committee that leaders at the Federal Bureau of Investigation were aware of questionable activities by Sessions.

"In light of reports regarding Mr. Comey's recent testimony", the attorney general wrote in a letter Sen. Spokesmen for the chairman and ranking minority member of the committee could not be reached to confirm whether the hearing will be open or closed to the public.
