Secretary Of The Interior Recommends Shrinking Bears Ears Monument

Zinke noted that tribal nations should co-manage some of the land. Herbert and other Utah Republicans oppose Obama's December designation of the Bears Ears monument.

The Mojave Desert Land Trust (MDLT) is a 501 (c)(3) non-profit organization with the mission to protect and care for lands with natural, scenic and cultural value within the Mojave Desert.

The Bears Ears decision announced Monday prompted fierce protests from environmental groups and some Democrats in Congress, including Sen.

The original decision to protect Bears Ears was made to combat the growing cases of vandalism and theft to the area's archaeological sites, which number over 100,000.

Utah rancher Zeb Dalton was among monument critics who wanted Zinke to recommend rescinding the entire monument.

The Wilderness Society reacted to the news saying it amounted to "nothing less than an attack on the future of all American monuments, parks and public lands".

The monument, as it stands, is a vast canyon region of red rocks named for two towering buttes called the Bears Ears.

Part of this controversy pushed Trump to sign an executive order April 26 directing Zinke to review the Antiquities Act and certain national monument designations before this administration.

Zinke also recommended that tribes be allowed to co-manage "cultural areas" within the resized monument - a nod to Native Americans who had lobbied for protections for the territory - and that Congress review conservation policies in the area.

"For us, Bears Ears is a homeland".

We appreciate Secretary Zinke's process over these last 45 days, his willingness to listen to OIA and the outdoor industry's concerns, and we will encourage him to make a final recommendation that keeps the bulk of Bears Ears National Monument intact and protected. He said there have been numerous bills in the past to do that - and there is a new one before Congress now - but they never go anywhere. This new development is the latest confirmation that the Trump administration intends to take bold, unprecedented action to erode the protections for millions of acres of land across the country that belong to you and me.

But Zinke, a Republican, said Monday he's confident that won't be the case in 2017, with the GOP in control of both chambers and the White House.

"I have enormous respect for tribes", Zinke said. This, however, merely would be a sort of redo of the Public Lands Initiative spearheaded by Rep. Rob Bishop, R-Utah, over the past several years. "That's exactly what the Secretary submitted". "It's not about the nuances of the Antiquities Act, it's about appeasing political allies and special interests", the tribal group Utah Dine Bikeyah said in a written statement.

Any action President Donald Trump might take to undo the creation of the monument would be unlawful, Mills said.

Mills on Monday issued a news release and a copy of the comments filed with the Department of Interior about the Katahdin Woods and Waters National Monument, less than 36 hours before Secretary of the Interior Ryan Zinke's Wednesday visit to ME, as part of a federal review of whether it was created legally.
