Secret Service says it has no Trump tapes

The issue of recorded Trump conversations was raised by the president when he threatened ousted FBI Director James Comey with potential "tapes" of their conversations after Trump abruptly fired the bureau's chief.

"In response to your request, the Secret Service has conducted a reasonable search for responsive records", the agency concluded.

Specifically, the Wall Street Journal requested any information pertaining to all recording systems installed by the Secret Service or any other agency within the White House on or after November 8, 2017, as well as any recordings or transcripts of any recordings made after the inauguration within the White House.

The Journal noted that, of course, "recordings could have been created by another entity" and that "most parts of the White House itself are exempt from the Freedom of Information Act".

Since posting the provocative tweet last month, Trump and his White House aides have been coy as to whether such recordings exist.

One big strike against President Trump's insinuation that recordings of White House conversations might exist: The Secret Service isn't aware of any. The request from the Journal sought recordings or transcripts of any recordings made after January 20 at the White House.

White House press secretary Sean Spicer said Monday an announcement would come "when the president is ready to make it". He told reporters last week that he would discuss the possibility "in the very near future".

During his testimony before the Senate Intelligence Committee last week, Comey implored the president to "release all the tapes" he may have.

Asked whether she would find out, Sanders joked that she would "look under the couches".
