Russian Federation links a 'detestable lie', says Sessions

Blunt said, "What I remember (Comey) saying was that you didn't react at all and kind of shrugged".

Democratic Senator Ron Wyden told Sessions: "I believe the American people have had it with stonewalling".

Sessions ducked: "I don't recall it". "I tried to give my best and truthful answers to any committee I've appeared before and people are suggesting through innuendo that I've not been honest about matters", he said, in an apparent reference to Comey.

He may also face questions about comments by Trump confidant Chris Ruddy, chief executive of Newsmax, who suggested Monday that the president was considering firing Mueller, the special counsel appointed by the Justice Department to lead the FBI's Russian Federation probe.

Meanwhile, he said it was not improper for Trump to meet with the then FBI Director James Comey, but it was improper for Comey to disclose the content of his one-to-one talks with Trump.

In his testimony on Tuesday, Sessions addressed media reports that he may have had a third previously undisclosed meeting with Kislyak at Washington's Mayflower Hotel a year ago.

A Trump loyalist and early backer of the billionaire businessman's presidential bid, the 70-year-old Sessions has recused himself from all ongoing Russian Federation investigations. While Sessions' hearing didn't enjoy the same hype as Comey's - last Thursday was coined "Comey Day" by Washingtonians - it was no less important for both sides of the aisle.

Comey testified last week that as of February 14, he still believed Sessions had not recused himself - but that he nearly certainly would.

The high-stakes testimony also takes place amid reported friction between Sessions and Trump, who criticized the attorney general's decision to recuse himself from the Russian Federation probe. I trust the bipartisan Senate Intelligence Committee to finish this investigation swiftly and allow Congress to return to the business of implementing President Trump's agenda to repeal Obamacare, reform our tax code, rebuild our military and rollback red-tape. I continue to have complete confidence and trust in him as he serves as our Attorney General.

The former Federal Bureau of Investigation director also testified that he and the agency had believed Sessions was "inevitably going to recuse" for reasons he said he could not elaborate on.

The attorney general stepped aside from the Justice Department probe into Russian meddling in the campaign on March 2, the day after The Washington Post reported on two previously undisclosed meetings with Russian Ambassador Sergey Kislyak.

"I recused myself, not because of any asserted wrongdoing, or any belief that I may have been involved in any wrongdoing in the campaign", Sessions said, "but because a Department of Justice regulation".

One of those administration officials, Admiral Michael Rogers, head of the National Security Agency, met with members of the Intelligence Committee in a closed-door session, according to the agency.

He added: "Sen. Franken asked me a rambling question, after some six hours of testimony, that included dramatic, new allegations that the United States intelligence community has advised President-elect (Donald) Trump that there was continuing exchange of information during the campaign between Trump's surrogates and intermediaries for the Russian government".

"Sir, I'm not asking about the principle", Harris said.

Sessions was adamant that he did not have a private meeting with Kislyak at that event.

He said Sessions had a right to either answer, ask for a private hearing, or invoke executive privilege.

He said he was avoiding saying anything in case the president might later choose to exercise his executive privilege to withhold certain evidence.

"I don't know Sen".

"No, I don't believe I ever did", Sessions said.

Sessions repeatedly refused to discuss private conversations with Trump on a wide variety of topics.
