Ralph Northam wins Democratic nomination for governor

For lieutenant governor, Susan Platt received 48.49 percent of the vote in the Democratic Party primary compared to 35.74 percent for Justin Fairfax and 15.77 percent for Gene Rossi.

Northam the victor over former Rep. Tom Perriello, with most polls reporting.

Three Republicans are seeking their party's nomination.

At a town hall in Richmond a month earlier, Perriello suggested those votes would hamstring Northam in a general election debate with the likely GOP nominee, Ed Gillespie, who served as the Republican National Committee chair during Bush's re-election campaign before eventually working in his White House for 18 months. Frank Wagner as well as the support of most state Republican lawmakers.

Voters will decide tomorrow which candidates will square off in November, and once that happens the numbers on future campaign funding reports will rise exponentially.

The survey demonstrates extraordinary grassroots support for Tom Perriello.

If Perriello is injecting national politics into the race, Northam, a physician, represents a local voice.

Wagner has said proposed cuts are unrealistic and wants to increase the gas tax.

"Politicians have to be straightforward", Northam said.

Perriello embraced a new political terrain for Democratic candidates, one governed by opposition to Trump, grassroots, and small-dollar donor. While HuffPo, for example, calls the contest a "crucial test for the party's progressive wing", it doesn't mention that he has won endorsements not only from senators Elizabeth Warren and Bernie Sanders, the leading figures in the party's left wing, but also from Clinton campaign chairman John Podesta and policy adviser Neera Tanden, who are not exactly seen as stalwarts by Sanders fans.

CBS19 caught up with Perriello on Saturday at the Haven where he spoke with voters.

The weekend airwaves were filled with messages promoting the candidates for the other two offices, and how much you heard about the respective office-seekers may well be a function of the monetary support they have garnered to date.

Perriello said as governor he'd work to block the pipelines, while Northam has said only that they should be thoroughly reviewed before being approved.

At the outset of the campaign, Perriello drew headlines for his full-throated assault on Trump, an apparent effort to nationalize the race and coalesce the growing resistance to the incoming administration's controversial agenda. Perriello has pledged not to accept any money from the company, and has criticized Northam for doing so.

"I think the midterm elections and statewide elections are very critical to the national issues", said one voter. For someone making $60,000 a year, that would mean about $400 less in state income taxes owed.

In Virginia, meanwhile, Perriello's unexpected entry into the governor's race challenged the 60-year-old governor's plan to place an ally at the helm of a state that limits governors to a single four-year term.

President Donald Trump also has not endorsed a Republican candidate, even though his former Virginia state co-chairman, Corey Stewart, is attempting to capitalize on similarities between him and the president as a way to win the open seat.

As the campaign progressed, both candidates ran into roadblocks in the form of past votes that threatened to undermine their pitches to the party base.

"If you're looking for somebody who is not afraid of controversy, and if you're looking for a victor, then I am your candidate", Stewart said at a recent debate.
