President says Sessions did 'very good job,' comments on Mueller rumors

Attorney General Jeff Sessions has a lot on the line when he goes before the Senate Intelligence Committee Tuesday. "But I have to tell you, Sen". "Now you're not answering questions. You're impeding this investigation".

Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein said Tuesday he's seen no basis for firing Robert Mueller, the former FBI director he appointed as special counsel to oversee an investigation into potential co-ordination between the Trump presidential campaign and Russian Federation. Sessions met with Russian officials twice in 2016 prior to the election, but failed to disclose the meetings during his testimony to become Attorney General.

President Trump later said the firing was over "the Russian Federation thing". The former Federal Bureau of Investigation director discussed a host of issues surrounding Russia's meddling in the 2016 presidential election, though his remarks also raised questions that may now be directed at Sessions.

Democratic Senator Martin Heinrich accused Sessions of violating his vow to tell the full truth. "Americans don't want to hear that answers to relevant questions are privileged".

"I do not", Mr Sessions replied.

On Tuesday Sessions responded "I don't recall" to many questions that were thrown at him, at one point telling Sen.

Sessions' changing answers are a main reason the evidence of a possible third meeting is deeply concerning to lawmakers. He did not say he was using executive privilege, but rather adhering to longstanding tradition of Justice Department leaders not revealing private conversations with the president.

Executive privilege is a power that can be claimed by a president or senior executive branch officials to withhold information from Congress or the courts to protect the executive branch decision-making process.

Sessions, a close Trump adviser during the battle for the presidency, said in his opening statement that it was a "detestable and appalling lie" to suggest he was aware of or participated in any collusion between Russian Federation and the Trump campaign.

Manchin had picked the right guy to ask this question: Sessions chaired the Trump campaign's national security advisory committee, and he was a key adviser to Trump during the transition period (and Trump's designated AG pick).

"To suggest that I participated in any collusion is an appalling and detestable lie", Sessions told the committee. A friend of the president suggested a day earlier that Trump was considering such an ouster.

The former Alabama senator also defended himself against accusations that he misrepresented himself during his confirmation hearing when he said he hadn't met with Russian officials during the campaign.

Following the heated exchange with Wyden, Sessions repeatedly said he was not aware of any undisclosed meetings between Trump campaign officials and the Russian government. But the parameters of his recusal reemerged as an issue of controversy last month after Trump abruptly fired Comey, citing the recommendations of Sessions and his deputy Rod Rosenstein. Sessions explained that he was adhering to a Justice Department tradition and that he wanted to preserve the president's ability to evoke executive privilege. "So I need to be correct as best I can", Sessions said.

Attorney General Jeff Sessions is a star player in two key controversies about the Trump administration: the investigation into the Trump campaign's connections with Russian Federation and whether the president improperly interfered in an FBI investigation. Sessions recused himself from the Department of Justice Russia investigation in March, but then signed a letter endorsing Comey's firing in May. Sessions said he did not mislead Congress because the encounters were part of his job as a USA senator, not as a Trump campaign representative.

When asked by Cotton whether the collusion of a sitting U.S. senator and a foreign ambassador would ever appear in one of these "fantastical situations", like a clandestine meeting at the Mayflower Hotel, Sessions used another literary reference to demonstrate what he sees as the ridiculousness of such a theory. And he advised the president as much, mainly for the way Comey handled the Hillary Clinton email investigation.

It has always been known that Trump briefly met Ambassador Kislyak that day at a VIP reception shortly before he gave a foreign policy address at the hotel.

"No", Sessions joked, before admitting, "Yes, I do".
