May to form new government after losing parliamentary majority

Voters wiped out May's parliamentary majority and dealt a devastating blow to the Conservative Party in a snap election she had called to strengthen her hand in Brexit talks.

Brexit will likely be on the agenda at the Paris meeting, after May confirmed she will stick to the negotiating timetable.

If that threshold is not met, parties must form a coalition or risk losing the ability to govern effectively due to a hung Parliament.

Grim-faced, May said her Conservatives and the Democratic Unionist Party would together form a new government "that can provide certainty and lead Britain forward at this critical time".

After a brief meeting with Queen Elizabeth II at Buckingham Palace, May said Friday the new government will guide Britains exit talks from the European Union, which are set to begin in just 10 days.

Earlier this week during a speaking tour of the United Kingdom and Europe Sanders said he saw "a real similarity" between Corbyn's campaign and his own bid for the Democratic nomination in the 2016 USA presidential election. Brexit presents a thorny challenge to Northern Ireland, which shares a land border with the Republic of Ireland, which will remain in the EU.

May's party is short of the 326 it needed for an outright majority and fairly down from the 330 seats it had before the election. However, the people of Northern Ireland rejected Brexit with a 56 percent vote against leaving the European Union, creating added difficulty to any Brexit negotiations.

Asked about Schaeuble's comments, Macron said the EU's door was still open for Britain as long as the negotiations were not finished, but that it would be hard to reverse course. But EU Council President Donald Tusk said: "We know when they must end".

May, who ahead of the June referendum supported remaining in the European Union, has promised to start the Brexit talks next week but opponents of a sharp break with the European Union took her woes as a chance to push back against her strategy.

The Prime Minister called what she thought would be a Brexit-focused election, but the issue was quickly overshadowed by security as two deadly terror attacks, in Manchester and London, struck during the campaign period.

However, she unpredictably called for early elections in April as she was nearly positive that her part would win the vast majority. But even that arrangement seemed shaky.

"Obviously until we have that we can't agree the final details of the Queen's Speech", said May's deputy Damian Green, referring to an agreement with the DUP.

In May's camp, recriminations were immediate and stinging.

"The country needs a period of stability, and whatever the results are the Conservative Party will ensure we fulfil our duty in ensuring that stability", she said.

Labour party leader Jeremy Corbyn casting his vote at a polling station at Pakeman Primary School in London, England, June 8, 2017. Labour's increase in seats from 229 to 261 - with one seat still undecided - confounded expectations that his left-wing views made him electorally toxic.

Britain's election is providing another night of political shock and surprise. The Conservatives won 318 out of 650 seats.

Enthusiastic Remainers have been quick to jump on the election result as their latest opportunity to mould the UK's departure from the EU. "I would have thought that's enough to go, actually, and make way for a government that will be truly representative of all of the people of this country".
