Jury in Bill Cosby sex assault case adjourns without verdict

As the jury in Bill Cosby's sexual assault trial continues to deliberate, a Cosby spokesman released a statement from a woman who says Andrea Constand told her of a plan to falsely accuse a "high-profile person" of sexual assault so she could sue and get money. After six hours of deliberation, they asked Judge Steven O'Neill what the phrase "without her knowledge" meant, but he said that he could not define it for them, according to KFVS 12.

While admitting in a 2005 deposition he gave Constand several blue Benadryl pills that night in January 2004, Cosby has always said the incident was consensual. Cosby is charged with three felony counts of aggravated sexual assault, and faces up to 10 years in prison if convicted. In one, they asked for a re-read of the portion of the deposition that Cosby gave more than a decade ago that focused on his relationship with Constand since meeting her in 2002 through the night of the alleged incident.

Prosecutors say they chose to reopen the Constand investigation after reading the deposition, and during closing arguments, Montgomery County District Attorney Kevin Steele told the jurors: "All the fancy lawyering you have can't get you around your own words". Jurors want to hear more excerpts from a deposition Cosby gave as part of Constand's civil suit against him.

Jurors appeared exhausted and spent when they chose to call it quits late Tuesday after about 16 hours of deliberations. "I said 'I trust you.' I took the pills and I swallowed the pills down".

Through three notes to the presiding judge, the jurors signaled possible divisions as they asked to take a new look at the premier pieces of evidence presented by each side in the fiercely contested trial.

"Your friends", Cosby said he told her. "He gives her drugs, he puts his fingers in her, he knows what effects the drugs have so there's but one conclusion in this case and that's out of his own mouth, that's the case you have to decide".

The jury in Bill Cosby's sexual assault case is drilling down on what the TV star said happened inside his suburban Philadelphia home and his relationship with the accuser.

Constand either lied to police or committed perjury - regardless, the jurors must decide which truth, or lie, to believe. Those depositions became the basis of the prosecution in this case, when the seal on them was lifted in 2015 and the prosecutors got wind that they included admissions by Cosby that the routinely got Quaaludes in the '70s with the express objective of incapacitating young women so that he could have sex with them.

Jackson claimed the story captured Constand's interest, who confessed something similar had happened to her.

The Associated Press does not typically identify people who say they are victims of sexual assault unless they grant permission, which Constand has done.

Cosby's lawyers say Constand's initial report was inconsistent with her later statements.

After taking the pills, Constand said, she had trouble talking and difficulty moving and was suffering double vision, before briefly losing consciousness. Although the jury was behind closed doors for most of today, they did come out with three questions - adding to their one inquiry of Monday.

Nonetheless, the comedian whose storytelling artistry fueled a $400 million fortune went quiet when he had the chance to take the stand, unwilling to risk cross-examination about his 60 other accusers if he denied ever drugging or molesting anyone.

The defense had tried repeatedly since Cosby's December 30, 2015, arrest to have the case shut down.

"We're here because of them", he said, pointing to the benches of reporters covering the trial.

"They can still find a different form of justice, and that may be just having a voice and having their stories heard", said Jacobs.

But Constand's is the only criminal case against him as under United States statues of limitations.
