Jeff Sessions Didn't Exactly Give James Comey A Performance Review

The Attorney General vowed to defend his honour "against scurrilous and false allegations".

Sessions said Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein prepared a memo on Comey's performance that "noted some serious problems" with his performance. Aside from that, I'd say Sessions did about as expected. Days after that, Sessions also corrected his confirmation hearing testimony to inform the committee about the two meetings with Kislyak. Sessions argued that in the context of that hearing, "my answer was a fair and correct response to the charge as I understood it". Multiple reports have cited sources saying that central to that split was Trump's belief that Sessions should never have recused himself from overseeing the Russian Federation probe. "And I do believe it would destroy any shred of trust in the president's judgment that remains over here".

Associated Press writers Deb Riechmann, Sadie Gurman and Mary Clare Jalonick contributed.

Testifying last week, Comey said after that "disturbing" private talk with Trump, he went to the attorney general and told Sessions "it can't happen that you get kicked out of the room and the president talks to me". Rodman has traveled to the isolated nation four times previously and is one of few people to have met both North Korean leader Kim Jong Un and President Donald Trump.

"I did not have any private meetings nor do I recall any conversations with any Russian officials at the Mayflower hotel", he told the panel. Sessions recused himself on March 2 from the Justice Department's probe into interference by the Russians in the election.

Sessions denied the Mayflower meeting took place. "It's something that we both agreed to that a fresh start at the Federal Bureau of Investigation was probably the best thing", Sessions said of his conversations with Rosenstein regarding replacing the Federal Bureau of Investigation director before Comey was sacked.

And he said while it "appears" Russian Federation interfered in the 2016 election, he said he'd never asked about it at the DOJ, a stunning disinterest in the attack on democracy. Sessions recused himself from the Russia investigation after it was disclosed he met with the Russian ambassador to the USA twice past year, despite testifying at his confirmation hearing that he had no communications with the Russians. Barack Obama's Justice Department challenged the amendment previous year, and it lost in the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals. "Further, I have no knowledge of any such conversations by anyone connected with the Trump campaign", Sessions said.

This news comes amid reports that Comey asked Sessions not to leave him alone with Trump, and other reports that Trump is furious with Sessions over his recusal.

The Washington Post also recently reported that Sessions offered to Trump to resign, in part over Trump's frustration that Sessions stepped aside from the Russian Federation investigation.

As attorney general, Sessions is unlikely to answer in detail questions about conversations he's had with Trump.

Michael Reed, is the Research Director & Deputy Communications Director of the Republican National Committee.

White House spokesman Sean Spicer declined to say if he thought Sessions should refrain from revealing his conversations with the president, saying it "depends on the scope of the questions". He started his questioning chastising the members of the committee and then opened his questioning asking Sessions if he read fiction and liked James Bond and Jason Bourne movies.

Comey brought Sessions's meetings back into the spotlight last week when he told the Senate that there were even more meetings between Sessions and Kislyak.

According to Comey, Trump said of Flynn: "He is a good guy". Comey's decision to announce previous year that Clinton would not be prosecuted over her emails was a "usurpation" of the Justice Department's authority, Sessions said. The Trump administration didn't show its hand in advance of Sessions' appearance before the Senate Intelligence Committee. Ron Wyden. "I'm following historic policies of Department of Justice".

Lawmakers, including Al Franken of Minnesota and Patrick Leahy of Vermont, have asked the FBI to investigate and to determine if Sessions committed perjury when he denied having had meetings with Russians.
