Iran Arrests 7 Accused of Aiding Deadly Tehran Attacks

Iranian police say they have arrested several suspects in their investigation into the attacks on parliament and the tomb of Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, who led the 1979 revolution against the USA -backed shah and is considered the founder of the Islamic republic.

Iran's intelligence minister said the mastermind behind Wednesday's attacks in Tehran, which killed 17 people, had himself been killed on Saturday by security forces.

Also, the intelligence office of Iran's Fars province announced that seven people affiliated to terrorist groups were arrested in an operation on Thursday and Friday, semi-official Mehr news agency reported on Saturday.

"The mastermind who controlled the team. who had fled outside the country. paid the price for his crimes, with the cooperation of intelligence services of allied countries", Mr Alavi told state television.

The Islamic State claimed responsibility for the twin attack on Iran's parliament and the tomb of the country's former supreme religious leader Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomenei.

Iran's intelligence ministry said earlier on Thursday it had arrested more suspects linked to the attacks, on top of six Iranians, detained on Wednesday. Saudi Arabia has said it was not involved.

The attacks were the first in Iran claimed by the Islamic State, which has repeatedly threatened Shias, the second largest branch of Islam, a majority in Iran.

Iran has blamed Saudi Arabia, citing statements made against the Islamic Republic by the kingdom's foreign minister and deputy crown prince as having instigated the attacks.

Last Wednesday's rare and coordinated attacks on Tehran left dozens of people wounded.

IS has long vowed to attack Iran because the country had deployed military advisers and support to both Syria and Iraq in their fights against the extremist group.

"One of their brothers who was more risky than them fell into the hands of the intelligence services and has been arrested", the intelligence minister said in a televised press conference of the five gunmen.

The parliament hosted a funeral ceremony for the victims in Tehran on Friday attended by the top brass.

Iran is a key fighting force against IS and other groups in Iraq and Syria, and the Sunni jihadists consider Shiite Muslims to be apostates.
