I'm willing to testify under oath about Comey claims

Going after former FBI Director James Comey for leaking could backfire for President Donald Trump, experts warned Friday after Trump's personal attorney is said to be preparing to lodge a formal complaint.

"Some of the things he said just weren't true", Trump told a joint press conference with visiting Romanian President Klaus Iohannis.

Trump said he is "100 percent" willing to "speak under oath" to give his version of those events.

The former Federal Bureau of Investigation director said Trump's private comments urging him to drop the probe into former national security adviser Michael Flynn led him to tell his Justice Department colleagues they needed to be careful.

Nearly a month after suggesting that he recorded conversations with Comey in the White House, writing in an early-morning Twitter message that "Comey better hope that there are no "tapes" of our conversations", the president has yet to definitely answer the question of whether any such tapes even exist. Trump and his lawyer have disputed that the interaction occurred as Comey described.

Standing with the president of Romania, a North Atlantic Treaty Organisation partner, Trump at last confirmed his commitment to the alliance's mutual defense pact, Article 5, uttering words he deliberately did not say when he spoke at NATO's gathering in Belgium last month.

The president at a press conference in May said, "I respect the decision" to appoint Mueller as special counsel to lead the FBI investigation.

But as much as Trump looked to undercut Comey's testimony, he also heralded some of his claims, namely his comment there was no evidence of collusion between Trump and the Russians and no investigation into Trump personally during his time at the FBI. You suggested he didn't tell the truth in everything he said.

"The way that it was handled, with no follow-up, with no other press, with no other return to that topic, It looks like what I called a pretty light touch", Lankford also said on "Face the Nation" in reference to the February 14 conversation.

With a single tweet, Trump also castigated Comey as "a leaker" for giving an account of his conversation with the president to a law professor who shared it with a news outlet.

Former FBI director James Comey testifies before a hearing on Thursday.

Comey also spoke about Trump asking him for his loyalty, which the president denied Friday.

"It was clear that the president asked Mr. Comey to do an inappropriate action, and that was to drop the investigation of General Michael Flynn", Senator Susan Collins told CNN. "I hardly know the man. You have to run up the whole East Coast and you have to win everything as a Republican, and that's just what we did", Trump said.

The House requested Comey and the White House provide the records, including tapes if they exist, by June 23.

Michael Flynn was sacked as National Security Adviser after it emerged he had lied to Vice-President Mike Pence over a meeting with Russian officials.
