Huge fire engulfs tower block in London

Huge fire engulfs tower block in London

One side of the building appeared to be in flames, and 45 fire engines and 200 firefighters were called to the scene.

Residents who escaped spoke of others trapped and screaming for help, with some holding children from windows and others jumping from upper floors, the Telegraph newspaper reported.

This handout image received by local resident Giulio Thuburn early on June 14, 2017 shows flames engulfing a 27-storey block of flats in west London.

London Ambulance said it had sent a "number of resources" to the scene, including its Hazardous Area Response Team.

Firefighters gather at the building before searching for people who may have been trapped inside. Structural engineers were monitoring the building closely, but were not immediately concerned of a potential collapse.

Large pieces of debris could be seen falling from Grenfell Tower, a 1970s block in the working-class north Kensington area - a short distance from chic Notting Hill.

"I was informed that there are Filipinos who reside in the building and our efforts now is to trace if they have been brought to safety".

"There was no indication at all of any other cause except that it was a fire that broke out in an old residential building", he said.

Police, fire and ambulance crews raced to Grenfell Tower, part of the Lancaster West housing estate about a mile northwest of Kensington Palace, said the report.

London mayor Sadiq Khan told BBC Radio that there were questions that would need to be answered after the fire.

But residents of the building, which is public housing, had long warned of potential fire hazards even though it was completely renovated only a year ago.

The block's residents association had previously warned it was anxious about the risk of a serious fire.

He said it did not look like fire crews were able to get past the fourth floor - and spraying the building with water had not had much effect.

"I have seen it with my own eyes".

A fire that tore through a housing project in west London has killed several people, injured dozens, and many more are missing, according to the London Fire Brigade.

It has been confirmed that 50 people have been taken to hospitals across London.

The London Fire Brigade and Metropolitan Police were called to the scene at 1:16 am local time (00:16 GMT). "The cause of the fire is not known at this time".

"It is a truly terrifying thought but the Grenfell Action Group firmly believe that only a catastrophic event will expose the ineptitude and incompetence of our landlord, the [Kensington & Chelsea Tenant Management Organisation]", the group wrote.
