GOP rep.: Sessions needs to reveal info on Trump-Comey meetings

"I am not sure he is the best performer under questioning from fellow senators".

In March, Sessions recused himself from the federal probe into contacts between Russian Federation and the Trump campaign after acknowledging he met twice a year ago with Kislyak.

Comey himself had a riveting appearance before the same Senate panel last week, with some key moments centered on Sessions.

The former Federal Bureau of Investigation director also testified that the agency had believed Sessions was "inevitably going to recuse" for reasons he could not elaborate on.

Feinstein, who used to chair the Senate Intelligence Committee and is the top Democrat on the Senate Judiciary Committee, tossed a curveball back at the attorney general, arguing he should testify publicly before the seasoned lawyers and prosecutors of the Judiciary Committee.

Sessions will likely be asked whether he played a role in Trump's surprise decision to fire FBI Director James Comey last month - a move that caused Trump's critics to charge that he was trying to interfere with a criminal investigation.

"There's a real question of the propriety of the attorney general participating in that in any way, shape or form", Reed said on "Fox News Sunday".

Sessions was adamant that he did not have a private meeting with Kislyak at that event. White House spokesman Sean Spicer didn't address questions about potential recordings on Monday.

Of special interest will be Comey's assertion that he told Sessions after the meeting that he never again wanted to be left alone with the president. But senators on the committee are expected to question Sessions about his meetings with Russians - a topic that's come under increased scrutiny amid investigations into Russia's interference in the USA election.

"I think the President needs to let the investigation move on", the IL congressman said.

As attorney general, Sessions is unlikely to answer in detail questions about conversations he's had with Trump.

Sessions' answers about this and another encounter that Comey has described (more on that below) could be some of the most significant of the hearing on Tuesday.

Even the standard process itself of invoking executive privilege could be jumbled by the Russian Federation probe.

Sessions ison thin ice with Trump. It is obvious that Trump has not said a disparaging word about Putin and other dictators and has even praised him, not to mention many of Trump's staff have had Russian contacts before and after the election.

"If there are tapes, it is probably not very hard for the Justice Department to get them", Rotunda, a Chapman University law professor, told CNN.

The report raised questions of whether Sessions committed perjury, as his confirmation hearing was conducted under oath. Comey spoke of receiving pressure from President Donald Trump to drop a probe into former National Security Adviser Michael Flynn's contacts with Russian Federation.

The high-stakes testimony also takes place amid reported friction between Sessions and Trump, who criticized the attorney general's decision to recuse himself in the Russian Federation probe. "It doesn't serve him well or the party well to comment on everything".
