Google hires Apple chip guru to make Pixel even better

Google hires Apple chip guru to make Pixel even better

Gulati has a long work history in processors, having previously been employed by AMD and Broadcom before spending eight years with Apple. The Pixel and Pixel XL are rightfully called Google's answer to the Apple iPhone, coupling great software with great hardware. Those chips typically run run faster and better than those of rivals, in part because Apple is able to customize them for its phones and its own operating system, iOS.

Manu Gulati announced on LinkedIn that he had been hired by Google to be the "lead SoC architect" for the company.

Google's hire - Manu Gulati - had until May spent almost eight years at Apple, according to his LinkedIn profile. We may be looking at the beginning of an Android performance revolution in the works! On top of that, more SoC-related jobs have popped up on Google Careers, so it seems that Google is serious about creating its own chips.

As for when we might see Gulati's work inside of Google's phones, we aren't sure yet.

Like most non-Apple phones, Google has leaned on Qualcomm's Snapdragon chipsets for use in its own devices for years, including the now-defunct Nexus lineup and the current Pixel phones. Variety.com reports that some of these patent filings describe fundamental chip architecture, while others are specific to certain applications.

The custom chip strategy could also make Google's Android partners nervous.

"Hiring Gulati could now help Google to get an edge over other companies", according to Variety.
