Golden State Warriors defeat Cleveland Cavaliers in NBA Finals

Golden State Warriors defeat Cleveland Cavaliers in NBA Finals

But unlike last year's comeback when they took advantage of Harrison Barnes' offensive struggles, Durant answered every charge during a 39-point night and Cleveland will need to find new answers if these teams meet in a fourth straight Finals next season.

The Golden State Warriors celebrate with the Larry O'Brien NBA Championship Trophy after winning the NBA Finals against the Cleveland Cavaliers in game five of the NBA Finals basketball game at Oracle Arena in Oakland, Calif., June 12, 2017.

But there's this fact: He became the first player in National Basketball Association history to average a triple-double (33.6 points, 12 rebounds, 10 assists, and let's not forget a block and 1.4 steals per contest and 56.4 percent from the floor) in the Finals.

Wrapping up the series in five games meant the Warriors came through the post-season with a 16-1 record, with only the defeat in game four keeping them from perfection.

Durant, who famously called his mom the "real MVP" when he won the NBA MVP Award in 2014, knew what it felt like to lose a 3-1 lead - and losing to LeBron James.

An eight-times NBA All-Star, Durant has appeared in five Western Conference finals and two NBA Finals, the first in 2012 where his former Oklahoma City team lost in five games to the Miami Heat. "I'm not gonna lie, I didn't think it was going to happen, but you did it, so I'm going to congratulate you". It also kept the Cavaliers from becoming the first team in National Basketball Association history to come back from trailing 3-0 to win a best-of-seven series. But Durant is reportedly willing to take less than the max to re-sign with the Warriors.

From here to eternity, we'll say we saw these Warriors go from worst to first.

LeBron James and Kyrie Irving were their usual brilliant selves. The Warriors also got a huge game from Andre Iguodala off the bench, as he contributed 20 points in 38 minutes and dutifully locked down Irving and James.

James made a fast-break slam dunk over Durant for a 41-33 Cleveland lead, the Warriors forward getting away with a blow to James's head that would have brought his third foul early in the second quarter. The Cavs offense stagnated during that stretch as Cleveland missed 9 of 11 shots from the field, turned the ball over three times and had two missed free throws from Kevin Love.

Green stayed on the court in a game that featured three technicals on one play 3:08 before halftime. J.R. Smith and Tristan Thompson made big contributions.
