Fires Back ... Comey Lied and Leaked!

Fires Back ... Comey Lied and Leaked!

In the most eagerly anticipated US congressional hearing in years, Comey told lawmakers the Trump administration had lied and defamed him and the Federal Bureau of Investigation after the president dismissed him on May 9.

And over dinner at the White House in an earlier interaction, Comey wrote in his opening testimony, Trump had demanded loyalty, possibly in return for letting him continue in the job.

"I hardly know the man", Trump said.

"You and I are friends: 'Hey, I hope this happens, but you've got to do your job.' That's what he told Comey".

"James Comey confirmed a lot of what I said", Trump said, adding "some of the things he said just weren't true".

Trump declined to say whether recordings of his conversations with Comey exist, saying he would have more to say on the matter soon.

When reporters continued to press the president on whether there were tapes, and if and when the White House would release them, he responded: "I'm not hinting about anything, I'll tell you in a very short period of time. You're going to be very disappointed when you hear the answer".

The President also denied Comey's claims that he asked him to end the FBI's investigation into national security advisor Michael Flynn.

Trump broke his silence on Twitter following explosive testimony by Comey, declaring "total and complete vindication".

He also claimed that Mr Comey's comments to the Senate Intelligence Committee failed to prove any collusion between the Trump campaign and Russian Federation.

Asked on Thursday at the hearing about the prospect of the conversations having been recorded, Comey replied: "Lordy, I hope there are tapes!"

"I can definitively say that the president is not a liar, and frankly I'm insulted by that question", Sanders said at a White House press briefing.

The House intelligence committee sent a letter on Friday asking White House counsel Don McGahn whether any tape recordings or memos of Mr Comey's conversations with the president exist now or had existed in the past.

Mr Trump's aides have dodged questions about whether conversations relevant to the Russian Federation investigation have been recorded, and so did the president in a series of teases.

During Thursday's hearing, Donald Trump was unusually silent on social media, even as Mr Comey accused his administration of spreading lies.

The request is a sign of escalating fallout from riveting testimony from Mr Comey last week of undue pressure from Mr Trump.

He hinted again that he had tapes of his private talks with the former Federal Bureau of Investigation chief that would disprove Mr Comey's account, but declined to confirm the existence of any recordings. But what wasn't clarified was whether Trump is now being investigated for obstruction of justice.
