Cristiano Ronaldo Accused Of Being A Serious Tax Cheat

"Ceding image rights to (Tollin Associates) was completely unnecessary and its only objective was to create a screen to hide the totality of his image rights income from the Spanish tax authorities", the statement said.

THE Madrid prosecutor's office has charged Cristiano Ronaldo with defrauding the Spanish authorities of £13million.

In fact, officials say Ronaldo set up shell companies (based in the Virgin Islands) as a "screen" to keep the money from Spain's Tax Office.

His criminal case follows that of arch-nemesis and Barcelona player Lionel Messi, who received a 21-month suspended jail sentence and a $2,2 million (R28,1 million) fine on three counts of tax fraud.

Last month, the Spanish tax authorities announced Ronaldo had adjusted his tax declarations and paid an extra 6 million euros in 2014.

Gestifute, the agency representing the Portugal captain, said in a lengthy statement posted on its website the matter is a complex financial one.

The player allegedly failed to pay 1.39 million euros in taxes during the 2011 fiscal year; 1.66 million in 2012, 3.2 million in 2013 and 8.5 million in 2014.

"Any insinuation or accusation made to Cristiano Ronaldo or Jose Mourinho over the commission of a tax offence will be reported to the legal authorities and prosecuted".

His agency also mentioned that this case could be related to different interpretations between the British and Spanish tax systems over where to declare some revenues.

Real Madrid has declined to comment on the star's legal situation.

Last year he secured a contract with Real Madrid for more than $50 million per year for the next four years and scored a lifetime deal with Nike worth more than $1 billion. He has led Madrid to back-to-back Champions League titles and its first Spanish league in five seasons, and helped Portugal to win last year's European Championship.

He has since denied any wrongdoing.
