Cow vigilantes arrested for assault on Indian officials

A mob of around 50 intercepted five trucks late on Sunday on suspicion that the cows were being smuggled but police said the animals had been legally bought by the Tamil Nadu government under a scheme to protect them.

The team of five assistants and a veterinarian from Tamil Nadu had purchased 50 head of cattle, including cows, bulls and calves of the prized Tharparkar variety at a cost of Rs. 50 lakh, and were transporting them in five trucks.

A case against 50 persons has been registered causing hurt to public servant and for criminal force to deter public servant from discharge of his duty and also under the NH Act. "The cows were rescued and taken to a local cow shelter for the time being", he said.

Chainaram, Kamlesh, Vikram and Jaswant have been arrested. The officials were doing so in accordance with a special project of the Tamil Nadu Government, called the National Cow Breeding Programme. They also tried to set the truck on fire but police reached the spot and prevented them. But the self-styled cow vigilantes didn't allow the officials to talk or to explain even a bit. In another instance, Vigilante attacked a 55-year-old cattle trader, Pehlu Khan in Alwar and four others.

CPI Tamil Nadu unit secretary R Mutharasan urged the state government to exert pressure on the Centre and Rajasthan government to ensure legal action was taken against the vigilantes, who attacked the officials.

The miscreants allegedly drunk asked the truck drivers to stop their vehicle and assaulted the officials including a veterinary doctor travelling along with them.

The cattle purchased by the Tamil Nadu animal husbandry Dept. from Rajasthan's Jaisalmer district were slated to reach Chettinad as a part of the state-run programme "Rashtriya Gokul Mission"/ National Agricultural Development Programme (NADP) run under Union Ministry of Agriculture umbrella.
