Britain can still remain in EU: French President Macron to May

Emmanuel Macron said that France wanted the talks to get underway as "quickly as possible".

May is traveling to France "in a significantly weakened position" because of her election setback and will be watched closely by Macron and other EU leaders, said Joseph Dobbs, a research fellow at the European Leadership Network in London.

The two countries will lead joint work with internet giants to explore the potential for new tools to identify and remove harmful material automatically.

The words to "God Save the Queen" were displayed on big screens around the Stade de France before France's meeting with England, allowing the French spectators in the crowd of close to 80,000 to sing along with their English counterparts.

Their first bilateral meeting had the uncomfortable backdrop of Mrs May - overseas for the first time since losing her majority - meeting the President flush from his recent election victory and on the brink of big gains for his party in parliament.

Mr Macron threw out the olive branch, even amid rising European Union anger about the delays to the exit talks - which he said should be "launched as soon as possible".

- France and the United Kingdom are considering imposing fines on social media companies "that fail to take action" against terrorist propaganda and violent content, under a joint anti-terror campaign announced Tuesday, June 13.

Once Brexit has begun, 'it's much harder to come back, ' French president says.

The British premier said she thought there was "unity of goal among people in the United Kingdom. that their government gets on with [Brexit] and makes a success of it".

Speaking ahead of her visit, Mrs May said she and the president were determined to ensure the internet could not be used as a safe space for terrorists and criminals.

He said that from a European point of view, as long as the negotiations are not over, there is still a possibility to change the course of the events.

After two Islamist attacks in less than two weeks, May's bid to clamp down on internet extremism has struck a chord with global leaders especially Macron, whose country has suffered several jihadist attacks since 2015.

UK Prime Minister Theresa May and French President Emmanuel Macron plan to lead a joint crackdown on technology companies that fail to remove terrorism-related content, including fines.

Another eight people, including three French nationals, were also murdered in a terror attack in London on June 3.

But May and Macron want to deepen counterterrorism cooperation after a string of attacks hit both of their countries, and they are notably talking Tuesday about ways to incite tech companies to better police online extremism.

Macron chose Berlin for his first trip overseas as president, holding talks with Merkel just days after taking office last month.
