Bill Cosby jury to hear more of his deposition testimony

Actor and comedian Bill Cosby (L) leaves with his spokesman Andrew Wyatt after a break in the deliberations in his sexual assault trial at the Montgomery County Courthouse in Norristown, Pennsylvania, US June 12, 2017.

The jury in Bill Cosby's sexual assault trial has been sent home after deliberating without reaching a verdict over whether the veteran entertainer drugged and molested a woman more than a decade ago.

Jurors have begun their deliberations in Bill Cosby's sex assault trial.

The Associated Press does not typically identify people who say they are victims of sexual assault unless they grant permission, which Constand and Johnson have done. McMonagle added that Cosby's "romantic interludes" with Constand were examples of Cosby being disloyal to his wife, but he didn't commit any crimes.

Prosecutors countered by saying "fancy lawyering" can't save Cosby from his own words - namely, his admission about groping Constand after giving her pills he knew could put her to sleep. In his six-minute appearance Monday, Shaffer said that Constand had visited with Cosby at an out-of-state casino and that police knew he had vision problems more than a decade ago.

The defence case consisted of a six-minute appearance by a detective, seemingly created to remind jurors that Andrea Constand had visited with Cosby at an out-of-state casino and that police knew he had vision problems even then.

After the prosecution took five days to outline its side, the defense case consisted of just one witness, a detective, and six minutes of testimony earlier in the day.

Her lawsuit against him had elicited four days of testimony from Cosby about his sexual conduct with some of them.

In one of America's biggest celebrity trials in years, the 79-year-old pioneering black comedian faces three counts of aggravated indecent assault, which each carry a maximum sentence of 10 years in jail and a Sh2.5 million ($25,000) fine.

Monday's closing arguments finished out Day 6 of Cosby's criminal trial.

Evidence of dozens of phone calls made by Constand to Cosby after the alleged assault were entered into the record, including one lasting nearly 50 minutes.

Constand told the jury the calls mostly involved the women's basketball team at Temple University, where she worked and he was a powerful trustee.

"This isn't talking to a trustee, this is talking to a lover", he said.

"Hopefully, you will have the last two words in this case, and I pray those words are not guilty", McMonagle said to the jury. "Why are we running from the truth of this case - this relationship? Why?"

Cosby's wife of 53 years, Camille, was in court for the first time in the trial. She sat in the front row during closing arguments by the defense.

Cosby's primary accuser, Andrea Constand, received an unknown amount of money from a civil case she filed.

He said Constand was always clear on the key facts: Cosby gave her unidentified pills he suggested were herbal, and then sexually abused her. Prosecutors also called a second accuser, Kelly Johnson, who told jurors that Cosby sexually assaulted her in a similar manner in 1996.

And all along, they said Constand was a willing romantic partner.

Prosecutors say his prior use of Quaaludes shows that Cosby had knowledge of what he was doing when he gave her the pills.

He told Judge Steven O'Neill that he had decided not to testify after speaking with his lawyers. His deposition was sealed for years until a judge released parts in 2015 at the request of The Associated Press.

McMonagle told the jury that Cosby's freedom is at stake now, not just his finances.

The defense says when the case began it was about money, but now it's a about a man's liberty. "He's an actor and he's a very good actor", Duquesne University School of Law professor Wes Oliver said ahead of Monday's court session.

Mr Steele also reminded jurors about a telephone conversation in which Cosby apologised to Ms Constand's mother and described himself as a "sick man".

He noted Cosby's familiarity with the effects of Quaaludes - which he had previously said he had administered to women he wanted to have sex with, according to his 2005 civil deposition - as well as Benadryl, which he claimed he gave to Constand.
