Authorities seek 2 escaped inmates after 2 guards killed

Donnie Rowe and Ricky Dubose have been identified as the two inmates who killed two correctional officers Tuesday morning.

According to Putnam County Sheriff Howard Sills, the escape took place around 6:45 a.m. ET between Sparta and Eatonton, Georgia.

One of the inmates shot and killed both officers, police said, adding that Rowe and Dubose are believed to be armed with the officers'.40 caliber Glock pistols.

His voice shaking, he said, "I had their blood on my shoes".

Rowe was sentenced up to life in prison for convictions of armed robbery and aggravated assault in a 2001 case, according to the Georgia Department of Corrections website. Both are believed to be armed and unsafe.

"Both officers were known for their unwavering commitment to their job and their love of family", the Georgia Department of Corrections said in a statement.

Under investigation is how the pair overtook the guards and out of the caged area of the bus where they were riding and how they managed to get through the locks, Sills said.

Authorities are urging anyone who sees men fitting the description of the suspects to call 911 right away.

In Washington, Rod Rosenstein, deputy director of the U.S. Department of Justice, referred to the killings while speaking to the Senate Appropriations Committee. He was in prison for armed robbery, possession of a firearm during a crime and aggravated assault.

One of the correctional officers was driving the bus, the other was in a front seat. "We see our officers as our family", Dozier said.

White said in June of 2015 Dubose entered a plea of guilty on those charges and in exchange for the plea Dubose agreed to a sentence that would not allow him to be paroled until 2034.

Atlanta's Federal Bureau of Investigation office is offering a $60,000 reward for information leading to the fugitives' capture. Monica, 42, began working for the Department of Corrections in 2009 and was promoted to sergeant in 2012. The suspects then carjacked a dark green 2004 Honda Civic and fled from the scene shortly before 7:30 a.m. Tuesday.
