Attorney General Jeff Sessions denies 'false and scurrilous allegations'

Trump watched Sessions testify aboard Air Force One during about 90-minute flight to Milwaukee, an aide told CNN.

"Not one thing happened that was improper" in his two meetings as a senator with the Russian ambassador a year ago, he told the lawmakers, vowing to defend his "honor against scurrilous and false allegations".

"Well, Sen. Wyden, he did not say that", Sessions said. Angus King if the President invoked executive privilege to prevent his testimony, Sessions responded, "I am protecting the right of the President to assert it if he chooses; and there may be other privileges that could apply in this circumstance".

Sessions refused to say whether he had ever discussed the Russian Federation investigation with Trump, arguing that he could not disclose private communications with the president.

And California Sen. Dianne Feinstein appeared puzzled by Sessions' reasoning for not providing more details. "I have confidence in Mr. Mueller", he said.

But Sessions said that despite his sense of problems at the Federal Bureau of Investigation, he never raised that with Comey.

Sessions also argued that his recusal from the Russian Federation investigation did not mean that he should be barred from his oversight duties over the FBI, following claims by Democrats that he should have not played a role in Comey's firing. "At all times throughout the course of the campaign, the confirmation process, and since becoming attorney general, I have dedicated myself to the highest standards".

U.S. intelligence agencies believe that Russian Federation interfered in the election in order to help Republican President Donald Trump get elected. U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions on Tuesday strongly denied the accusation that he colluded with Russian Federation during last year's Donald Trump campaign, calling it an "appalling and detestable lie".

Sessions was supposed to testify before the appropriations committees, as past attorneys general have, but on Saturday, Sessions wrote the chairmen of both committees and said he was sending his deputy attorney general to testify in his place.

"I have never met with or had any conversation with any Russians or any foreign officials concerning any type of interference with any campaign or election in the United States", he said on Tuesday.

Comey told lawmakers last week that he knew details that made Sessions's involvement in the FBI Russia probe "problematic".

He asked Sessions whether he talked to Kislyak about Russian interference in elections held by USA allies.

The Senate committee is of one several congressional panels that, along with a special counsel, is also investigating whether any Trump campaign officials colluded with the alleged Kremlin plot. A friend of Trump's said Monday that the President was considering taking just such a step.

Then, perhaps unintentionally, Sessions referred to a possible third meeting between himself and the Russian ambassador to the US Sergey Kislyak, which Comey had reportedly told senators about in a closed hearing.

"That's my judgment that it would be inappropriate for me to answer and reveal private conversations with the president when he has not had a full opportunity to review the questions and to make a decision on whether or not to approve such an answer", Sessions said.

  • Sessions says he was never briefed on Russian interference
