An Indian smartphone user to consume 11GB data a month by 2022

In the first quarter of 2017 some 250m new LTE subscribers were added.

Some of the other reasons driving data traffic includes and increased distribution, and consumption of video and multimedia services as well as growth in mobile banking transactions and digital payments, the latter of which can be credited in part to demonetisation. As of 2016, 70 percent of all mobiles subscription are on GSM technology, and the report foresees that by the next five years, 85 percent will be on LTE and WCDMA/ HSPA technologies.

Ninety percent, or 66 billion GB, of the monthly 2022 traffic will be carried on smartphones, Ericsson said. By 2022, this number is expected to reach over 60 percent.

Ericsson analysis from App Annie data in February this year shows that the top types of local/regional apps Australians are using are finance, weather, access to mobile services providers, real estate, travel, and video streaming.

The report said operators should optimise network upgrade decisions by identifying where subscribers are most likely to be and identify which 2G sites to upgrade to 3G and 4G rather than roll out new sites.

Niklas Heuveldop, Chief Strategy Officer and Head of Technology and Emerging Business, Ericsson, says: "Based on measurements made in hundreds of mobile networks, the Ericsson Mobility Report data truly illustrates the tremendous underlying growth in the industry". Fundamentally the report calculates that by 2022 global mobile data traffic will increase to eight times its current level. Furthermore, it sees over 1 million new mobile broadband subscribers being added each day to reach around 2.6 billion by 2022.

While LTE uptake is driven by demand for improved user experience and faster networks, 5G deployment will also be driven by the need for enhanced mobile broadband capabilities as well as industry solutions for efficiency and automation.

It says that, in mature mobile broadband markets, consumers typically expect a time-to-content of four seconds or less, which requires a minimum downlink speed of roughly 1Mbps for web browsing, 5Mbps for video streaming and 10Mbps for HD video.

Even without India and China, the Asia Pacific region boasts the largest number of mobile subscriptions.

Contributing to those numbers is the high number of mobile subscriptions across Canada and the US - approximately 380 million today, including 310 million smartphone subscriptions - a number that is expected to grow to 430 million by 2022.

The average smartphone in Western Europe will consume 22GB per month by 2022 compared to 26GB per month in North America.
