Amazon executive hopeful Siri and Alexa will communicate with each other

Amazon executive hopeful Siri and Alexa will communicate with each other

The tech giant's new voice-activated speaker is set to "reinvent" music in our homes.

Apple at its Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) on Monday unveiled the HomePod smart home speaker.

Speaking to USA Today in an interview published on Wednesday, Amazon senior vice president of devices David Limp seemed unmoved by Apple's new smart home speaker HomePod.

Both the Google Home and the HomePod have a sleeker aesthetic design, though on the other hand Alexa is available in three different speakers: the Echo, the Echo Dot, and the portable.

Unvieled at this week's WWDC17 conference, the new device uses personal digital-assistant Siri and core Apple services like Apple Music.

The speaker has 7-beam forming tweeters and a 4-inch woofer facing upwards.

The HomePod speaker stands just under seven inches (18 cm) tall and is covered in fabric mesh that will come in white or gray. Note that there's still a good deal we don't know about the HomePod yet - Apple declined to comment on if the device will support multiple users, for instance, and it's not clear if it'll integrate with Spotify. Amazon Echo Vs Apple HomePod is a competition worth seeing, but I believe that Apple lags in this race big time. According to Apple, that's in audio quality.

A speaker might help customers stay loyal to other services such as Apple Music, Apple Watch, Apple TV and AirPods.

It's probably fair to say Google and Amazon are less interested in audio performance, though their speakers still sound decent. While Amazon Echo has the first mover's advantage and is priced much lower compared to Apple's Home Pod ($180 vs $349), consumers looking for advanced features and better sound quality may prefer the latter.

HomePod has a LED on top of it, which turns on when you use the Hey Siri, just like the other Apple Devices.

Speaking of the limited and delayed access of Siri, a developer Brian Roemmele, who attended WWDC said, "People went from being happy and excited to sitting in workshops and realising, I can't use it".

The Journal report said Apple protects user privacy by randomly tagging Siri searches and keeping the information tagged for a timeframe of six months, unlike its competitors Amazon and Google, which retain the data until ask for it to be discarded. And there was little talk of Siri, but rather a stronger focus on the HomePod's audio capabilities.

Apple has entered the Bluetooth speaker market with the HomePod.

Maybe the heftier hardware inside the HomePod can explain the sky high price of the device, but it might still need a lot of improvements and additional software support to challenge Amazon head on.

As for support for third-party developers, Amazon features Alexa Skills while Apple now does not offer a comparable service for the HomePod.
