X-ray services at Basingstoke hospital hit in NHS cyber attack

NHS Grampian said it remains "completely confident" no patient data was accessed in the ransomware attack, which hit 13 health boards across the country and countless nationwide, leaving some with a backlog of postponed appointments to contend with.

Following a meeting of the Government's Cobra contingencies committee, Home Secretary Amber Rudd said more than a million patients had been treated in the course of Monday.

"The National Cyber Security Centre and the NCA (National Crime Agency) are working with Europol and other global partners", said Rudd.

The NHS announced on Monday that it was "open for business" but acknowledged that some hospitals and GP surgeries are still suffering disruption.

The attack has hit at least 150 countries since Friday and infected 200,000 machines, according to the European law enforcement agency Europol.

The virus swept across the NHS on Friday, holding computers to ransom for $300 worth of online currency Bitcoin, threatening to delete files if the payment was not made.

Queen Alexandra Hospital in Portsmouth was unaffected by the attack. He told the Tele: "We have had IT engineers in working tirelessly over the weekend".

He added: "Where we need to cancel planned appointments, we will be contacting patients directly to make them aware and we apologise for any inconvenience caused".

The WannaCry virus, the name of the ransomware used for the cyber attack, does not affect other systems, such as Apple.

"We are still in a major incident, so we would like to remind patients to use our A&Es wisely and only attend in life threatening or emergency situations". Thousands of computers and other Microsoft-based systems in Europe and Russian Federation had already fallen victim to the ransomware attack, reported ABC News. Such issues are solvable but the NHS is overstretched financially and has a patchy record of rolling out IT products, in part because of the small cadre of outsourcing providers it relies on have failed to deliver the anticipated results.

Riverbank IT Management managing director Malcolm Newdick said: "Last week's ransomware attack was the most risky malware attack we have seen".
