White House explains delay in firing Flynn

According to Yates, Flynn misled officials and media outlets like NBC News by stating that he did not discuss Barack Obama administration sanctions on Russian Federation when in fact he had. For example, she said that she'd twice met with the White House counsel to detail her concerns about Flynn.

Yates' comments came after former Obama officials revealed that the outgoing president himself firmly warned Trump against naming Flynn as national security adviser, only two days after the November 8 election. Mr Obama had cautioned against Mr Flynn, whom he fired in 2014 as head of the Defence Intelligence Agency because of his poor record in administration and personnel management.

"To state the obvious", she added later, "you don't want your national security adviser compromised with the Russians".

Graham, along with Senators Ted Cruz (R-TX) and Charles Grassley (R-IA), and others, grilled Clapper and Yates over the unmasking of Flynn and his conversations with Russian ambassador Sergey Kislyak, and the subsequent leak to the Washington Post. Michael Flynn, and what Yates knew of Russian election interference. But President Donald Trump waited 18 days before showing Flynn the door for lying to Pence.

Throughout the Russian Federation probes, the Trump White House has pointed to testimony earlier this year from Clapper that he had seen no evidence in the January intelligence report of collusion between the President's campaign and Russian Federation.

Earlier in the day Trump shot off a series of pre-emptive Twitter strikes, accusing Obama of enabling Flynn, and assailing Yates for allegedly leaking classified information.

Then, prompted by Democratic Sen.

Yates told the panel that she had a meeting with White House Counsel Donald McGahn on January 26 to tell him that she had information that statements by Vice President Mike Pence, based on his conversations with Flynn, were false.

Spicer defended the White House process in handling Flynn, even though the former National Security advisor wasn't immediately removed from duty after the warnings. The House and the Senate are also investigating whether there was any collusion between members of Mr Trump's team and Russian Federation.

"I believe they are emboldened to now continue such activities, both here and around the world", Clapper said.

He said Yates was appointed by the Obama administration and that she was "a strong supporter of [Hillary] Clinton". The warning, first reported by NBC News via former Obama aides, came up during a discussion of White House personnel.

"We were giving them [White House officials] this information so they could take action".

Clapper was instrumental in the USA intelligence community's conclusion that Russian Federation sought to boost Trump's chances of winning the election by hacking into the computer of the campaign chief for Clinton.
