US Senator McCain calls for Turkish ambassador's dismissal

US Senator McCain calls for Turkish ambassador's dismissal

The State Department has criticized the Turkish government over violence outside its embassy, where Erdogan's security staff broke up an anti-government protest.

"The fact that the US, which has not taken any steps forward on Gulen despite the insistent demands of Turkey, put Pastor Brunson on the agenda at high-level meetings begs the question: why is the priest important for the USA?" the newspaper asked, implying America was colluding to defend Gulenists. "It would be beneficial if this person is changed", Cavusoglu said.

In his first public address since returning from a visit with U.S. President Donald Trump, Erdogan said he told the United States that Ankara would "exercise its rights under the rules of engagement", without consulting anyone, if it felt it needed to. "We call upon the Turkish government to apologize immediately for the involvement of any officials", the statement continued. They have raised concerns with the Turkish government "at the highest levels".

Footages of a brawl between a small group of protesters believed to be pro-Kurdish and some men dressed in black suits, identified as Erdogan's security agents, went viral on social media.

"We should throw their ambassador the hell out of the United States of America", McCain told MSNBC's "Morning Joe" on Thursday. The State Department and politicians condemned the attack.

"We should throw their ambassador the hell out of the United States of America", Sen. He wrote that bodyguards with Erdogan on his official state visit to Washington "viciously beat multiple individuals, throwing them to the ground and kicking them in the head".

In their Oval Office meetings Tuesday, Trump did not mention Erdogan's increasingly tight grip on power in Turkey or allegations of irregular elections under his leadership.

Spokesman Martin Schaefer said Consul General Georg Birgelein met for 80 minutes with Die Welt correspondent Deniz Yucel on Thursday for an unsupervised conversation.

Eleven people were injured, including one police officer, in what law enforcement called a "brutal attack".

The Turkish embassy released a statement on May 17 that contradicted US officials and video evidence, blaming instead the demonstrators, who, it said, had been "aggressively provoking Turkish-American citizens who had peacefully assembled to greet the president". It also fueled the perception that the US allows Turkey's leader to bring strongman tactics with him when he visits the USA capital.

The statement added that, "Turkey is a key NATO Ally that faces legitimate domestic security concerns emanating from ISIS, PKK, and other designated terrorist organizations".

Last week, the Trump administration announced that it would arm the YPG - as a delegation of high-level Turkish military and intelligence officials were visiting Washington in advance of Erdogan's meeting with Trump.
