US extends sanctions relief under Iran nuclear deal

U.S. President Donald Trump on May 17 extended sanctions relief for Iran according to nuclear deal even as he imposed narrow penalties on Iranian and Chinese figures for supporting Iran's ballistic missile program.

"Last month the Treasury Department imposed the first human rights-related sanctions designations against Iranian individuals and entities since December 2014, and we will continue to pursue initiatives around the world that uphold our core values of promoting and protecting human rights", said Jones.

"This administration is committed to countering Iran's destabilizing behavior, such as Iran's development of ballistic missiles and support to the Assad regime", Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin said in a statement later on Wednesday.

However, the US Treasury issued fresh sanctions against specific officials and a Chinese business with links to Iran's missile programme.

Iran's presidential election is Friday, pitting a conservative hardliner against incumbent President Hassan Rouhani, a moderate whose government negotiated the nuclear agreement with the Obama administration and others.

Unnamed officials earlier told Reuters earlier that Washington had already noted Iranian officials that the waivers would remain in place.

Since then his rhetoric against this particular agreement has softened, however, he has simultaneously hardened his stance against other non-nuclear issues his administration has with Iran and launched a government-wide review of the Iranian state's policies. His re-election would be welcomed by Europeans who desire more business dealings with Tehran and who likely would resist or ignore any USA efforts to slap nuclear sanctions back on Iran.

On Thursday, Iran blasted the new bans and said it would retaliate by adding nine USA individuals and corporations to its own sanctions list over human rights violations within the United States.

Meanwhile, Tehran underlined that it will not stop its missile program despite a new round of sanctions.

Rather than permanently repealing United States sanctions, which would have required congressional action, the Obama administration put a temporary hold on them, which must be periodically extended as long as Iran remains in compliance with the deal.

Along with the department's letter to Congress announcing those waivers, the administration is announcing new sanctions on Iranian defense officials, an Iranian company and a Chinese-based network that allegedly supplied Iran with "missile-applicable" items.

Many Iranians have expressed their disappointment at the fact that the economic boom they expected post-sanctions relief has not yet come, suggesting a growing impatience among the Iranian population with Rouhani's continued optimistic talk of the nuclear accords.

But some supporters of a more aggressive approach to Iran praised the measures unveiled Wednesday, arguing that the United States needed more time to gain leverage over Iran before it addressed the shortcomings of the nuclear deal.
