Unnamed White House Official Says Trump Is 'Completely F-ed'

"Our job is to be responsible, sober and focus only on gathering the facts".

According to the U.S. constitution Congress is tasked with oversight over the Executive Branch.

Even by Trump administration standards it's been a chaotic week or so.

"Speaker Ryan has shown he has zero appetite for any investigation into President Trump", Rep. Elijah Cummings, D-Md., said at a press conference Wednesday.

In a twist on Wednesday, Russian President Vladimir Putin offered to turn over to Congress his diplomats' records of Trump's Oval Office discussions with them.

The bombshell Comey news came as the beleaguered administration was still struggling mightily to explain Monday's revelation that the president had disclosed highly classified information to the Russian foreign minister and the country's ambassador to the United States.

It's far too soon to make a definitive judgment about whether any laws have been broken in connection with the president's contacts with James Comey, the Federal Bureau of Investigation director he fired a week ago. He dismissed outrage over Trump's disclosures as USA politicians whipping up "anti-Russian sentiment".

This week, the New York Times published excerpts from a memo Comey wrote, indicating that Trump had asked for the FBI to drop its investigations into Michael Flynn, the former national security adviser who resigned amid a previous bout of Russia-related scandals. Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska) and Rep. Adam Kinzinger (R-Ill.) - joined Democratic colleagues in calling for an independent investigation of Russian meddling in the 2016 election and ties to the Trump camp. The House Oversight and Government Reform and Senate Intelligence committees have already requested any Comey memos.

"We are all in this together", he said.

The panel's top Democrat, Elijah Cummings of Maryland, a constant Trump critic, called the allegation of Trump pressure on Comey "explosive" and said "it appears like a textbook case of criminal obstruction of justice".

Serving as an early-warning sign for potential damage to the party is Rep. Carlos Curbelo (R-FL), who saw his South Florida congressional district vote for Hillary Clinton by 16 percentage points previous year - the most for any GOP lawmaker seeking reelection in 2018. But having been used once in humiliating fashion, Rosenstein is unlikely to bend to the White House's wishes a second time. "The White House has put out a statement very clearly with our account", he said.

The committee's letter to the White House noted Trump's tweets last week suggesting he had "tapes" of his conversations with Comey and included audio recordings in its request for "all White House records memorializing interactions with Mr. Comey relating to the FBI's investigation of alleged ties between President Trump's associates and Russian Federation, or the Clinton email investigation, including all audio recordings, transcripts, notes, summaries, and memoranda".

Flynn was sacked on February 13 after it was revealed he had misled Vice President Pence about his conversations with Russian Ambassador to the U.S. Sergey Kislyak about U.S. sanctions recently imposed on Russia; Flynn had been speaking with Kislyak during the transition period between Election Day and Trump's inauguration.

Senator John McCain, the 2008 Republican presidential nominee, warned guests at a Tuesday dinner that Trump's missteps were "reaching Watergate size and scale", referring to the 1970s scandal that brought down Richard Nixon.

Sacked FBI Director James may get his day back in the spotlight on Capitol Hill - if a leading Republican congressman can find his phone number.

If Republicans pull off victories in upcoming special House elections in Georgia, Montana and SC, they'll likely be even more encouraged to stay the course with Trump. Not long after Comey put that exchange with Trump in writing and after the FBI director told lawmakers the investigation of Russian interference and possible ties between Russia and the Trump campaign was active, Comey was sacked. And then, there's the question of recent demands by ranking Democrats on the House oversight, judiciary and intelligence committees for any possible White House recordings, transcripts or notes memorializing Trump's side of the story.

"I'd be leaning more toward cancellation if I thought it likely the tumult Trump keeps unleashing were going to settle down rather than continue unabated", said Kori Schake, a former official in the George W. Bush State Department who has also co-authored a book with Mattis.

The Times reported that Comey wrote in a memo that Trump told him that "He is a good guy". The American Civil Liberties Union announced Wednesday it would also ask for documentation of the conversation between Comey and Trump.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell responded tersely "no" when pressed on whether he had concerns about the president's ability to handle classified information, or whether he was losing confidence in Trump.
