Trump 'leaking secrets' to Lavrov shows U.S. plagued by political schizophrenia - Putin

According to sources familiar with the matter, Trump asked Comey to end the investigation into former national security adviser Michael Flynn, a request documented in a memo written by the former FBI director.

"There may be grounds", Lynch told WBUR's Radio Boston. Trump fired Comey last week, sparking suspicions that the president is trying to cover up his administration's ties with Russian Federation.

"Trump began the discussion by condemning leaks to the news media, saying that Mr. Comey should consider putting reporters in prison for publishing classified information, according to one of Mr. Comey's associates", The New York Times said.

Rosenstein appointed a special counsel to oversee the probe on Wednesday, in an escalation of the investigation that Trump called "the single greatest witch hunt of a politician in American history!"

"It's hard to imagine what else can these people who generate such nonsense and rubbish can dream up next", said Putin. "Depending on the facts - we should do a thorough investigation - if those elements are met, and it certainly looks like it's very close to the line, yeah, this would be an impeachable offense". Angry over the steady stream of leaks from within his administration, he suggested that Comey jail journalists for publishing classified information and expressed his hope that the FBI director would drop the ongoing investigation into Flynn.

Putin said the controversy was a sign of "political schizophrenia" in the U.S. that was meant to incite "anti-Russian sentiment".

Trump has come under fire following news reports that he shared sensitive intelligence about the Islamic State militants with Lavrov and Russian ambassador Sergei Kislyak during a meeting at the White House. The Senate Intelligence Committee also wants Comey to testify both publicly and in private.

Trump on Tuesday defended an apparent decision to share intelligence information with Russian Federation just hours after his surrogates flatly denied the disclosures.
