Trump claims unearned exoneration on Russian Federation

Trump claims unearned exoneration on Russian Federation

Sen. John McCain invoked Watergate in describing the escalating controversy surrounding alleged ties between President Donald Trump's campaign and Russian Federation.

"This is a truth hunt", said Democratic senator Amy Klobuchar.

President Donald Trump asked then-FBI director James Comey to end the investigation into ties between former national security adviser Michael Flynn and Russian Federation, according to a memo written by Comey.

White House officials cast Rosenstein as the prime person behind the decision to fire Comey, even though Trump had already chose to terminate the director.

In some of the longest exchanges with reporters during a week filled with explosive headlines, including news that Comey had penned a memo documenting the president asking him to stop investigating Flynn, Trump said he thought the decision to fire Comey would be bipartisan, said repeatedly there was "no collusion" between his campaign and Russian Federation, and attempted to spin it as a partisan distraction.

In his earlier Twitter posts, Trump criticised the naming of former Federal Bureau of Investigation director Robert Mueller as a special counsel by deputy attorney general Rod Rosenstein, an official he himself appointed. Trump fired Comey May 9.

Comey's dismissal last week set off a series of jarring developments that culminated on Wednesday in the Justice Department's appointment of a special counsel to probe possible ties between Russian Federation and Trump's 2016 presidential campaign.

The scope of Mueller's investigation includes "any links and/or coordination between the Russian government and individuals associated with the campaign of President Donald Trump".

U.S. stocks recovered ground on Thursday as upbeat economic data emboldened investors to return to the market, a day after Wall Street saw the biggest selloff in eight months on worries the political turmoil could undermine Trump initiatives such as tax cuts that investors see as favouring economic growth. On the other hand, we're talking about Donald Trump.

Erick Erickson, a conservative activist who has been critical of the president, recently wrote that because the notoriously thin-skinned president doesn't like internal criticism, some aides "are left with no other option but to go to the media, leak the story, and hope that the intense blowback gives the president a swift kick in the butt".

"If the White House is looking for this global trip to turn the page, then it really needs to come off well without any balls dropped or serious mistakes", said the strategist, who requested anonymity.

Burr told reporters Thursday about the response from Flynn's lawyer.

"I don't think it's not just a question of doing real estate deals", said Mr Gorka. And I thought that was was something that was bad, ' said Trump.

"Look at all the people on the Democratic side, not only the Republican side, who were saying such awful things about Director Comey".

In a normal political world this would be the moment that congressional Republicans said "enough is enough" and finally held Trump accountable for his actions. It cited two people briefed on the call.

The White House quickly denied any suggestion that Mr Trump was trying to obstruct justice - a criminal offence - in his dealings with Mr Comey, whom he fired last week.

Asked about possible obstruction of justice, Republican House of Representatives speaker Paul Ryan told reporters the special counsel would "follow the facts where ever they may lead" and that "it is premature to prejudge anything at this point".
