Trump administration keeps Iran deal alive, but with new sanctions

The Trump administration announced on Wednesday that it is sanctioning several entities in connection with Iran's ballistic missile program, which the US intelligence community estimates could be used to carry nuclear weapons over great distances, according to an announcement by the Treasury Department. "Iran will continue its missile program forcefully...as planned", he said.

Trump threatened to tear up the nuclear deal during his campaign and has launched a review of its terms, but until then the deal requires him to renew sanctions relief at regular intervals.

Stuart Jones, acting assistant secretary of State for Near Eastern affairs, said: "This ongoing review does not diminish the United States' resolve to continue countering Iran's destabilizing activity in the region".

"It's a clear message to foreign banks and companies looking to do business with Iran: You will be taking significant risks if you deal with a regime engaged in continued malign conduct and still covered by a web of expanding non-nuclear sanctions", he said.

North Korea possesses nuclear weapons, and many western countries as well as security experts suspect that Iran harbours designs to acquire atomic arms for itself, in addition to its suspected arsenal of chemical weapons that were produced during the 1980s.

Also under USA sanctions hit the Iranian company Iranian Novini System Management. "President Trump is determined to hold Tehran accountable for its risky and aggressive behavior that is destabilizing the Middle East, while making it clear to the Iranian people that he stands with them-not with the regime that has oppressed them for so long".

"I will continue to monitor this situation closely", Trump added.

Elsewhere in his comments, Naqavi Hosseini called on Foreign Ministry officials to take the necessary action against US hostile moves, saying he has information about more than 50 anti-Iranian sanctions being drafted in the US Congress. Iran will hold is presidential election on Friday, May 19, and sees the incumbent moderate president Rouhani face off with a conservative hard-line challenger, Ebrahim Raisi.

Separately, the State Department said it might add new sanctions targeting Iran's human rights abuses, which also are not covered under the nuclear deal, also known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action. The Syrian agency produces unconventional weapons, such as the chemical weapons Assad's forces used earlier this year.

The Trump administration has imposed additional sanctions on Iran relating to certain individuals involved in that country's ballistic missile program.

In addition, under the sanctions were three Chinese companies: Shanghai Gang Quan Trade Co., Shanghai North Transway International Trading Co and Shanghai International North Begins. Shiraz is controlled by the Iranian military, supplying it with missile guidance technology.

The Trump administration will have to waive more sanctions next month if it wants to stick by the nuclear deal. Iran is buying 20 of the ATR 72-600 planes.

The State Department report on Iran's human rights abuses, which is submitted to Congress on a semi-annual basis, will review the human rights sanctions that have been issued in the last six months, including individuals added to the USA sanctions list in April due to abuses at Tehran's Evin Prison.
