Syria says US airstrike killed several soldiers near Jordan

Syria says US airstrike killed several soldiers near Jordan

The Syrian government, which has launched an offensive in the country's south backed by its allies - militias such as Iranian paramilitaries and the Lebanese Hezbollah group - has vowed to reach the border area with Iraq.

"Any military actions that lead to a deterioration in the situation in Syria obviously impact the political process", deputy foreign minister Gennady Gatilov was quoted as saying by state-run RIA Novosti in Geneva.

"Such actions that were carried out against the Syrian armed forces. this is completely unacceptable, this is a breach of Syrian sovereignty", he said.

Russia's Foreign Affairs Ministry claimed that the U.S. attack on a convoy backed by Syrian President Bashar al-Assad resulted in civilian casualties.

President Trump said the missiles were launched to condemn the deadly sarin gas attack, which claimed the lives of 87 people.

"The Syrian Arab Army is fighting terrorism on its territory, and no party has the right to determine the course of its operations", the Syrian military source added.

The air strike was the first such close confrontation between United States forces and fighters backing President Bashar Assad and the development is likely to increase tensions in the war-torn country.

U.S. defence secretary General James Mattis denied the destruction of the convoy, which included a number of tanks, marked an escalation of America's intervention in Syria.

We review the key developments in Syria, including Syrian and Russian anger over a USA airstrike, the walkouts threatening to derail Geneva peace talks and defeat for ISIS following its bloody raids on two central Syrian villages. "But we will defend our troops".

Russian Federation on Friday condemned strikes by the US-led coalition against Syrian forces as "unacceptable", state media reported, after the bombing of pro-government troops.

The coalition said "apparent" Russian attempts to stop pro-Assad forces from moving toward Tanf, as well as warning shots and a show of force, had failed.

A 34-mile defensive zone exists around the base, and it is believed these forces strayed inside that.

American officials and Syrian activists said the strike hit the pro-Syrian government forces as they were setting up fighting positions in a protected area in the desert near the border with Jordan.

The convoy was believed to have been about 17 miles away from the base when it was hit. A road between Iraq and Syria would facilitate the flow of assistance from Iran, which is a strong backer of Assad.
