Swedish prosecutors drop rape probe against WikiLeaks's Assange

Lawyer David Allen Green, who has followed the case, tweeted: "Once outside embassy, Assange more at risk from any United States extradition attempt than if he had gone to Sweden".

Four hours later, he tweeted: "Detained for 7 years without charge by while my children grew up and my name was slandered".

Meanwhile, Assange's lawyer in Sweden told Swedish Radio, as reported by AP, that the decision by Swedish prosecutors was a total victory for Assange and that he is now free to leave the embassy when he wants. But Assange later wrote on Twitter that he would "not forgive or forget".

"Chief Prosecutor Marianne Ny has today chose to discontinue the preliminary investigation regarding suspected rape concerning Julian Assange", the prosecutor's office said in a statement.

Friday was the deadline for the Swedish prosecution to send a request to Stockholm District Court in the Assange case.

Sweden has dropped its rape investigation against Julian Assange and will revoke its arrest warrant, the Swedish Prosecution Authority has announced on its website.

Prosecutors have been accused of vacillating, first dropping the preliminary investigation and then re-opening it and of dragging their heels over questioning Assange. "So we don't make any statements on the issue of guilt", she said via a translator.

A lawyer for Assange welcomed the decision of prosecutors to drop the seven-year rape investigation against him, saying it was the "end of his nightmare".

But London's Metropolitan Police in a statement said it would have to arrest Assange if he leaves the embassy because he failed to surrender to the Westminster Magistrates' Court in June 2012.

It added: "The priority for the MPS must continue to be arresting those who are now wanted in the Capital in connection with serious violent or sexual offences for the protection of Londoners".
