Study Finds That 'Beauty Sleep' Is Actually a Real Thing

Compounding the idea of beauty sleep, new research shows that a couple nights' bad sleep is enough to make a person look "significantly" uglier.

The eye-opening study was conducted by the Karolinska Institute, which asked 25 university students to take part. Recent findings show that acute sleep deprivation and looking exhausted are related to decreased attractiveness and health, as perceived by others. The volunteers - who were given payment for their help - were sent home with a kit that would measure their night-time movements to check that they had not cheated and slept when they should not have. Not only that, but when people were exhausted, they were rated as less attractive and less healthy than when they were well rested.

These changes alter our perception of attractiveness, intelligence and health, according to the study, suggesting beauty sleep could be a real thing. Then, they asked 65 women to rate the study's participants on how much they'd like to socialise with them, as well as attractiveness, health, sleepiness, and trustworthiness. Basically, if you look more exhausted, you also look more unhealthy, and this might trigger some diseases-avoiding reactions in others - which would explain why people would avoid socializing with sleep-deprived people.

They were also asked if they would like to socialise with the person in the photo, the "Los Angeles Times" reported.

In the first set of images, the students had eight hours of sleep for two consecutive nights.

A person's attractiveness score generally suffered when they were looking exhausted. If you're struggling to get enough sleep, she recommends stopping work on your phone or computer an hour before bed, keeping your bedroom just for sleeping, and trying to have regular sleep hours. After that, they were photographed by the researchers.

"Judgement of attractiveness is often unconscious, but we all do it, and we are able to pick up on even small cues like whether someone looks exhausted or unhealthy".

You know that it's important to get a good night's sleep, and odds are you probably try to do the best that you can. "We want our partners to be attractive and energetic. Most people can cope just fine if they miss out on a bit of sleep now and again".
