Princes William and Harry pay tribute to mother's legacy

The award is a tribute to Princess Diana, whose work "touched the lives of millions", William told the audience. The award serves to recognize the "monumental impact" they have made on society.

William, 34, noted the young age at which Diana died in a Paris vehicle crash in 1997, saying, "The truth is, though, that she was taken at only 36, just slightly older than I am today".

To mark the occasion Prince William took to the podium to reflect on his mother's own legacy, remarking that this year will be the 20th since her death.

The Duke of Cambridge and Prince Harry presented a new award, on behalf of The Diana Award, which honours the legacy of their mother, Diana, Princess of Wales.

Those receiving the Legacy Award have demonstrated qualities of kindness, compassion and service and Diana's sons will meet with the winners to hear their stories during the event in central London.

The Diana Award is a charity set up in memory of Diana, Princess of Wales, who died in a Paris vehicle crash 20 years ago, and her belief that young people have the power to change the world for the better.

Prince William said during the awards ceremony that his mother "touched the lives of millions" during her life and still inspires "countless acts of compassion and bravery" two decades after her death in a auto crash.

Tessy Ojo, Chief Executive of The Diana Award said the ceremony was a "landmark event" for the charity.

'She visited hospitals late at night to comfort patients; she spent hours writing letters to privately support the work of others; she achieved a lot by shining a spotlight, but she worked just as hard when the cameras were gone'.

"Seated here today are 20 extraordinary young people who are doing just that. It left me feeling profoundly hopeful for our future knowing these young people will be part of that future and our future leaders".
