Nigerian airline, Medview, banned by European Commission

NAIJ.com recently reported that a Medview Airline flight from Lagos to Abuja was suspended midair after a fault was observed on the plane.

According to reports, Medview was one of those under the EU Air Safety List Annex A, which included a total of 181airlines banned from operating to Europe.

The Commission said the EU Air Safety List seeks to ensure the highest level of air safety for European citizens, which is a top priority of the Aviation Strategy adopted by the Commission in December 2015.

Air Zimbabwe announced in 2015 that it would seek European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) certification as part of its ambitious plans to widen its revenue streams by establishing an aircraft maintenance centre for regional and global carriers.

"The airlines Med-View (Nigeria), Mustique Airways (St. Vincent and the Grenadines), Aviation Company Urga (Ukraine) and Air Zimbabwe (Zimbabwe) were added to the list due to unaddressed safety deficiencies that were detected by the European Aviation Safety Agency during the assessment for a third country operator authorisation", the EU announced on Tuesday.

The airline regretted the anxiety the misinformation might have caused its teeming passengers and assured them that there was no basis for alarm as the Lagos-London flight remains unaffected.

The European Commission says the ban on Air Zimbabwe is of "an indefinite duration" after the airline failed the safety test.

"We at Med-View Airline are committed to safety, and now working with EASA and NCAA to restore normalcy, the statement said".

A wet lease is a leasing arrangement whereby one airline (the lessor) provides an aircraft, complete crew, maintenance, and insurance to another airline or other type of business acting as a broker of air travel (the lessee), which pays by hours operated.

"The aircraft being used in such operations could be branded as if it belonged to the fleet of the banned airline".

An operator in the industry whose airline recently stopped flights to London told THISDAY that besides the safety reasons, European Union often bans airlines from largely third world countries to allow only airlines from Europe to operate to Africa, some parts of Asia without corresponding flights from indigenous airlines.

The airline immediately stopped flying to London, one of its most lucrative routes.
