NC jobless rate falls in April, 4.7 percent nears US average

The state's labor force grew by nearly 1,900, to more than 2.3 million people. Even though our private sector job growth rate is exceeding the nation's, it is now lower than it has been over the past year.

The Indiana Department of Workforce Development says the state lost 9,300 private sector jobs last month, though private sector employment has grown by almost 29,000 over the past year.

Gedney also said the rate workers are leaving their jobs to seek career opportunities elsewhere in the state is the highest it has been in 10 years.

That corresponded to the national unemployment rate's decline, to 4.4 percent in April from 4.5 percent in March.

The largest private sector percentage job gains over the year were in professional, scientific and business services; construction; financial activities; education and health services.

California's unemployment rate fell to a near-record low of 4.8 percent last month, but experts cautioned that the Golden State's economy might be slowing down. Grand Island's preliminary rate rose two-tenths of a point to hit 3.5 percent last month, compared with 3.3 percent in March.

The drop marks one of the lowest rates since September 2007, and is only slightly higher than the national unemployment rate of 4.4 percent. Data for previous year, available with the labor bureau, shows that jobs have been shrinking in most key sectors such as textiles, leather, metals, automobiles, gems and jewelry, transport, information technology and handloom. However, analysts are quick to point out that part-time jobs started from a smaller base, which means any growth since then has appeared larger than it otherwise would.

Workforce conditions remained tight throughout much of ME in April with very low unemployment, particularly in the southwest portion of the state.

"While job growth was more subdued in April, Washington's economy continues to trend positively", Paul Turek, economist for the department, said in a written statement.

Australian employers increased hiring for a seventh consecutive month, reflecting a broad recovery in the nation's labor market. "Manufacturing employment varies from month-to month". The manufacturing sector added 200 jobs but has lost 2,000 since past year.

In a year-over-year comparison (April 2016 to April 2017), nonfarm payroll employment in California increased by 236,700 jobs (a 1.4 percent increase).

Despite the weakness in April, the labor market is showing more signs of life with 101,000 full-time jobs added so far this year.

Still, state labor economists emphasized that CT gained jobs steadily over the year. The unemployment rate in the Orlando metro area was 3.6 percent.
