Microsoft reportedly held back WannaCry patch for older Windows versions

Microsoft reportedly held back WannaCry patch for older Windows versions

Though clients are partly to be blamed for not upgrading their systems, Microsoft could have behaved more responsibly, as it had full knowledge of the severity of the security loophole and its global impact.

The group went quiet for a while before resurfacing on 8 April with a new update which it said was in response to President Trump's order to bomb a Syrian airfield. The company said the virus has been localized and "technical work is underway to destroy it and update the antivirus protection". And while Microsoft had already released a security update to patch the vulnerability one month earlier, the sequence of events fed speculation that the NSA hadn't told the US tech giant about the security risk until after it had been stolen.

Chief information and digital officer Peter Knight said the Trust was aware of the attack but that its security systems had held up against it.

But the larger questions surrounding cyber security persist.

"It is important to understand that the way these attacks work means that compromises of machines and networks that have already occurred may not yet have been detected, and that existing infections from the malware can spread within networks", said the U.K.'s National Cyber Security Centre in a statement Sunday.

Mrs May said the Government was putting £2 billion into cyber security. Chinese secondary schools and universities were affected, manufacturing facilities in France and Slovenia were forced to shut down, parts of the FedEx computer network were impacted, as were networks in Brazil's national petrochemical country as well as its court system and foreign ministry.

Following a meeting of the Government's Cobra contingencies committee, Home Secretary Amber Rudd said more than a million patients had been treated in the course of Monday.

It was "too early to say" what the overall cost of the attack to public coffers would be, he said.

Its warning allowed Microsoft to fix the issue with a patch that was issued in March, weeks before The Shadow Brokers leaked EternalBlue online.

Professor Helen Stokes-Lampard, chair of the Royal College of Global Positioning System, said the full extent of the attack's impact on general practice was still being worked out.

He told the BBC the act was "unprecedented in its scale" and warned more people could find themselves affected on Monday morning.

While measures have been taken to slow the spread of the malware, new variations have begun to come about. a 22-year-old cybersecurity expert known as MalwareTech slowed the attack by registering a domain name he discovered in the ransomware's code.
