Mayor Mitch Landrieu to give remarks on removal of four Confederate statues

There is new information involving the cost to remove four of the city's Confederate-era monuments, and we had questions for the city about why two of the statues are now sitting in a city lot and not in a warehouse like the mayor's office had asserted.

Beauregard's statue, near City Park, was erected in 1915 in honor of the prominent general who led the attack on Fort Sumter in SC, a siege that marked the beginning of the Civil War.

Still awaiting removal is the statue of Robert E. Lee, whose likeness stands atop a column in the center of Lee Circle. "We understand there are strong emotions surrounding this subject, and we ask that the public remains peaceful and respectful while demonstrating". The issue gained momentum after the 2015 massacre of nine black parishioners in Charleston, South Carolina, by a self-described white supremacist. The killer, Dylann Roof, was an avowed racist who brandished Confederate battle flags in photos, recharging the debate over whether Confederate emblems represent racism or an honorable heritage. Protesters who want the monuments to remain in place clashed some with the Take 'Em Down Nola group that wants the monuments gone.

The city council voted in April to declare the confederate monuments a nuisance and have them removed.

The removal of the Lee statue would mark the end of almost two years of fiery arguments and debates over the four monuments, which Landrieu and other city officials have argued were erected to reassert white dominance in New Orleans during the Jim Crow era.

A brass band arrived on the anti-monument side of spectators and chanted "take them down".

The Lee statue was erected in 1884 in honor of the military leader of the Army of Northern Virginia.

Die-hard monument supporters say the removal was an affront to history.

After the unveiling, a crowd of Confederate veterans circled the statue two or three times as strains of "America" and "Dixie" filled the air. The statue of P.G.T. Beauregard that once stood at the entrance to New Orleans' City Park is now gone.

Instead they said, "To ensure the safety of residents, contractors, and the community at large during the monument removal process, City personnel took place in public safety and homeland security operations". In a statement, the New Orleans City Park Improvement Association said it's not aware of any evidence that it owns the monument.

The statues may be placed in a museum or another site at some point, "where they can be placed in their proper historical context from a dark period of American history", city spokesman Tyronne Walker said. The city plans to have a public "water feature" at the location as well as some public art.

"I think now as they stand without any context, they are an endorsement of a shameful past", Mayor Levar Stoney said.

The city will begin a competitive RFP process to decide where the statues will eventually go.
