Many French voters yet to be convinced by Macron

The Swedish Prime Minister, Stefan Lofven, in his comment said: "I look forward to working with President-elect Macron to confront the common challenges and seize the common opportunities facing our two democracies".

The win for the 39-year-old, pro-Europe Mr Macron ended the dominance of France's mainstream parties, but the result was also a warning, with Ms Le Pen's National Front winning 35 per cent of the vote - nearly double what her father Jean-Marie secured in 2002, a result which rocked France at the time, triggering a "Republican front" to counter his rise.

Macron now becomes not only France's youngest-ever president, but also one of its most unlikely.

Helen Lhuillier, a 73-year-old French Canadian who has lived in France for 40 years and attended his supporters' victory rally outside the Louvre museum, said she liked Macron's "policies and his personality, his enthusiasm". If another party wins a majority, Macron could be pressured to choose a prime minister from that party, a situation the French call "cohabitation".

And while Le Pen's defeat was something of a thrashing, it was not as pronounced as the defeat of her father, Jean-Marie Le Pen, who ran for the National Front in 2002 and gained less than 18% of the vote.

A few minutes earlier, President Trump tweeted his congratulations to Macron, saying he looks forward to working with him.

"Knowing all of this the new French President may well find that winning was the easy bit", said Michael Hewson, chief market analyst at CMC Markets. "I want Emmanuel Macron to succeed".

President Donald Trump of the USA also said: "Ì look forward to working closely with President-elect Macron in the years ahead as we work together on a progressive agenda to promote worldwide security, increase collaboration in science and technology, and create good, middle class jobs on both sides of the Atlantic".

The France Le Pen described to supporters in her National Front party could not be more different.

39-year-old Macaron stepped down as leader of En Marche! to concentrate on his new job.

But even before the results were in, France had made clear it was looking for change.

Until now, modern France had been governed either by the Socialists or the conservatives - but both Mr Macron and Ms Le Pen upended those political traditions.

Beyond a long to-do list on domestic issues, Macron will have to deal with fractures in the wider region, including Russia's increasing hostility toward Europe.

Among those cheering Macron's victory will be officials in Brussels who work with the European Union.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said he wanted to work together with Macron on a "progressive agenda" to "promote global security, increase collaboration in science and technology, and create good, middle-class jobs on both sides of the Atlantic".

"It is Europe and the world who are watching us", he stated. Le Pen's proposals included holding a referendum on European Union and euro membership - and experts agree the euro wouldn't have survived the departure of its founding member and second-biggest economy.

Oxford Economics reported the following: "Emmanuel Macron's landslide victory shows French voters acknowledged that leaving the euro will not solve the economy's problems".
