Korea, US, Japan assure unity against N. Korea's provocation

The council urged North Korea to show "sincere commitment to denuclearization through concrete action" and stressed the importance of "working to reduce tensions".

Aside from space launches, Jeffrey Lewis of the Middlebury Institute of International Studies in the U.S. told AFP: "This is the longest range missile North Korea has ever tested".

Seoul- Washington and Tokyo have requested the Security Council to hold an emergency meeting, which could be held today in NY, according to what Uruguay delegation has announced.

Analysts said the UN Security Council would likely discuss new sanctions, with China possibly playing a role in their formation.

The session had been requested by the United States and Japan on Sunday, shortly after North Korea's test launch of an intermediate-range ballistic missile.

Her comments came hours after North Korea launched a ballistic missile that flew about 430 miles before crashing into the sea, USA and South Korean military officials said, in what appeared to be the latest missile test in defiance of United Nations sanctions.

North Korea's latest ballistic missile test may be almost as big a deal as its propaganda machine claims.

The state-run news organization also said that, after the launch, Jong Un "hugged officials in the field of rocket research, saying that they worked hard to achieve a great thing".

In his Monday statement, Gardner said the United States is not pressuring China enough, including by sanctioning those "enabling" the North's nuclear program. Yet 38 North also says new assessments of what North Korea's missile program can do are now necessary.

Each round has increasingly put a stranglehold on the country for conducting underground nuclear tests on five occasions so far and for test-firing long-range and other ballistic missiles it is banned from using.

Ji Jae Ryong told reporters Monday at the North Korean Embassy in Beijing that Pyongyang would continue to conduct launches in the future, as long as the country's supreme leader deemed necessary.

North Korea has tested dozens of banned missiles in the a year ago, though this was the first success after a string of recent failures.

It further called on all countries to implement the six North Korean sanctions resolutions already adopted by the world body "in an expeditious and serious manner". "With the missile impacting so close to Russian soil - in fact, closer to Russia than to Japan - the President can not imagine that Russia is pleased", the White House statement said.

U.S. Ambassador Nikki Haley raised the possibility of a new set of global economic restrictions for the North, including on oil imports.

But he slammed the latest missile test as a "reckless provocation" and said dialogue would be possible "only if the North changes its attitude".

KCNA called the missile a "new ground-to-ground medium long-range strategic ballistic rocket", and said the "Hwasong-12" was "capable of carrying a large, heavy nuclear warhead".

Newly elected President Moon Jae-in said the South had to "learn to say 'no, '" to the USA and to exhaust diplomatic ways of resolving issues with the North.

The missile travelled some 700km (435 miles), reaching an altitude of 2,000km and landing in the sea west of Japan. On Monday, South Korea's unification ministry warned North Korea to not miscalculate the situation.

After three failures last month, Sunday's liftoff was the first successful test of the liquid-fueled KN-17, which some experts see as North Korea's best chance to develop a reliable intercontinental ballistic missile.
